Perfect timing Kev. I ordered Rip's 4" kit for $279 last night. I'm all pumped now.

Man, I wish I would have seen this earlier. I just ordered my 4 in. system from Warp Speed Performance. $308 shipped from Arkansas to AZ. I hope its a good system. Anybody heard of them? They have excellent feedback on Ebay.

Reading out of my latest Diesel Power Magazine they have an article called "Pipe Dreams" it has some good points especially toward sizing.........read on

Pipe Dreams

Diesel enthusiasts already know the great power potential and more efficient fuel consumption offered by a diesel truck. All that power and economy doesnt come without picking the right parts though. An after market high flow exhaust system has to do more than simply make your truck sound better. Point in case with a 4" vs. 5 or 6 inch system, how big do you need to go? To answer that first we need to go over a few basics.
On most contemporary turbodiesel engines, the exhaust comes right off the exit of the turbo and after market exhaust manufacturers offer more than one tubing size to vent the exhaust more quickly.
One advantage of moving exhaust gasses quickly and efficiently is to reduce buildup of heat. Turbo diesel engines generate alot of heat, especially when the engine is under a heavy load. A high flow exhaust actually allows your diesel engine to run cooler and adds the potential for more boost when towing.
Large diameter tubing also reduces backpressure, making it easier for the pistons to shove that exhaust out of the cylenders and resulting inmore horsepower. Less backpressure allows the turbin to spin more efficiently, therefore it will build boost quicker and run cooler.
Interestingly enough however there is a point where bigger isnt necessarly better. While engine testing indicates that going from 3-1/2" to 4" can reduce backpressure by as much as 98%, ther can be less than 2% reduction above 4" exhaust. SO while a 5 or 6" exhaust looks cool it wont give you much more than just a coolness factor.

After reading that article, does it make sence that the slugish low end I thought I was feeling with the cat and muffler removed was real or not?
It almost felt like it needed something there.
With the high performance exhaust on it now , it just feels more responsive starting off.

It prolly is more responsive as the lesser back pressure is allowing for quicker spoolup .......kinna like a slingshot yaknow

That is a great article. I would love to read it all. You would not believe how many people I know that actually think that too big of an exhaust will kill performance. I have spent a lot of time contemplating this. I do know for a fact and from personal experience, that this is true for gas engines. When you factor in high compression, turbo, and the sheer fact that diesels have no throttle plates or butterflies to regulate the air, it just makes sence. The more air you can get in and the quicker you can get it out is a diesel engines key.

It has even got to the point with my diesel buddys that I was kinda thinkin they were right. Thus the reason for my backpressure thread somewhere on this site.

Anyway, great article and great post Whit.

What about MBRP? Any good? I know it's a little expensive, but does anyone have any feedback on their exhaust? I really like their "cool duals."
