Post Air Filtration Results with Various Aftermarket Filters - A

I've tried several different filters on this truck over the years and have been doing an oil analysis every 3K miles to check silicone levels (that is dirt let in by the air filter for the newbies) to see how well they filter. Just for info's sake, here are my results.

The location specific silicone average, meaning what they see on average from all of the samples done from different people living in my area and is considered "normal", is 7 parts per million (PPM) silicon:

Stock Filter: Averaged 6 ppm

AFE Standard Media Filter: Averaged 15 ppm

AFE PG7 Media Filter: Averaged 10 ppm

Uni Foam Filter: Averaged 10 ppm

BHAF: Averaged 4 ppm

It looks like the stock filter is a decent filter. Not surprising I guess. What is surprising is how much better the BHAF did over the rest. I used a Donaldson G110119 BHAF and it just plain ROCKED!

The AFE standard media filter was terrible, to the point of "dusting" the motor in less than 3,000 miles. Avoid that one at all costs.

The AFE PG7 media filter and the Uni Foam filter did about the same as far as filtration. Although not bad, neither had stellar performance and neither would lend itself to extended oil drain intervals. With these samples taken at just 3,000 miles, expect the numbers to go up at least a couple ppm at 5,000 miles. Also, the Uni filter was half the size and didn’t flow nearly as much air as the AFE. I suspect that if Uni had a better selection of cone filters (I used the biggest one they make) and they had one that flowed adequately for me (could support my twins), I wouldn’t have put nearly the suction stress on it and it may have done quite a bit better. Just guessing there.

All of these filters, except the stock filter, was used with either an AFE or an Outerwears pre-filter.

If your going aftermarket and good air filtration is your biggest concern, or if your looking for extended oil drain intervals, a BHAF is definitely the way to go. I just found it interesting when comparing the numbers this morning and thought I would share it.

Very nice info you dont by chance have the CFM info

to go along with this?
I "heard" the BHAF provides more CFM than a stock turbo can actually handle
and yet if you do make various modifications the BHAF does not and you "need " to go to a different filtering set up.
Is this true?
By the way I like the pictures of your topper however the beautiful sceanery behind it sort of takes away from the nice pick up ha ha!

Hey AK, good report!! I have 3 oil analyses with the K&N FIPK that I was running along with the filter condom/outerwear thing. All were in the 5-7 range for silicon at 5k miles give or take 500 miles or so!! I was also using WallyWorld SuperTech 15W40 dino oil too!!!

Right now I have the Fram Boost 2 intake on without a prefilter/outerwear/filter condom. My next scheduled oil change, I'll take a sample and see how that bad boy is doing for me!!

Good to see someone finally posting some results. My aFe had 11ppm the one oil test I ran, and that was with a dirty filter.

Thanks for the pics comment. You think the scenery is nice on screen, you should see it in person!

How much it flows depends on the BHAF used. The filter media is the same, but there are many different sizes out there. The one I used, the G110119, is not a filter I have ever seen anyone use before. I'm not sure how it compares size wise to the rest. They should all filter the same though. Most use a B105006 BHAF I think. That filter will probably do you proud with the stock turbo, but won’t flow enough to support some of the bigger aftermarket turbos people are using.

The AFE filters are an oiled cotton gauze filter and the BHAFs are a paper based filter. AFE filters are suppose to be something like 99.93% efficient. The stock filter is something like 99.95% efficient. BHAFs are 99.98% efficient. I never thought such a small difference in efficiency would result in that much more dirt getting by.

FWIW,

My recent oil analysis for an AEM Dryflow synthetic filter (part number 21-2059DK) was at 2 PPM. This was at approximately 4,000 miles with Schaeffers 15W-40 oil.

That is pretty good. What is the unit average for your area?

Was running a Fleetguard BHAF (part number AH19037) with an Outerwares prefilter before I recently installed the AEM Dryflow synthetic. Was getting 3-4 PPM for silicon on 8500-9000 oil changes with Schaeffers 15W-40. Live in an area that is a combination forest, ranching, and farming. Summer is when it gets dusty around here so we will see how the AEM filtration holds up during the summer. Recently changed to Schaeffers 5W-40 so we will see how this oil does also.

We'd need to test an AMSOIL filter with the same test method to determine how the Nanofiber filters compare.

Some good comparative results from other filters would be sweet! Really need to know the silicone level location average for you though. It is extremely dusty up here. My 15ppm silicone with the standard AFE was netting a friend only 7ppm with the same media in the lower 48. 7ppm sounds good, but not if the average for his location is 4ppm.
