If you're getting it to seal, the best way I found to get air bubbles out was to go to the lowest side, which is likely the isolator end, undue the connection. Stick a little syringe in the tube filled with anti-freeze. (You can also use water in your mouth if you have enough anti-freeze in there.)Have a helper on the gauge end loosen the fitting. Then with the syringe, push the fluid up the tube (and the air bubble out.) When the bubbles are gone, have your helper tighten the fitting. The vacuum should hold the fluid in there while you reconnect.

One word of caution: Over tightening compression fittings will result in leaking. Sometimes, even loosening and re-tightening will cause it to begin to leak.

UPDATE: I got myself what I consider to be a "proper" ferrule <sp?> and nut and re-attempted to seal up my guage side air leak, IT NOW WORKS FLAWLESSY.
Never did get to the copper tube experiment either. I'll get pics posted up of both the old (combo nut and ferulle) and new (seperate ferrule and nut) as soon as possible.
I redid the fluid with Dad98.5's suggestion above and it worked out better than me forcing it from the high side (guage) down to the isolater then capping it tight at the isolater!! Vacuum does suck....
