Mirrors: Color Matching

Well I decided to color match my mirrors. I looked on the forum and noticed that there were several questions about doing this, but no one has done a write up. I didn't think to take pictures until after I had already started the process, so for the first part I don't have any pics. Anyways, here goes....

The cost for the paint, clear coat, and other supplies was about $300. I know for that price you could probably have someone do it, but I wanted to do it myself, plus I wanted some extra paint to do a hood scoop and any other odds and ends that I might get the urge to do.
On a side note, when purchasing paint, it works best to have your VIN # since there may be slight variances within a color code. For example, the code for my truck is PRH which is Inferno Red, but there were two shades of the color. With the VIN# the guy mixing the paint was able to determine the correct one.

First off, I started by removing the door panel from the truck. I followed this How To: Interior door panel removal for 06

There is a plug for the power mirrors that needs to be removed. There are three 10mm nuts that secure the mirror to the door, remove these. Pry the tabs on the female e end of the power mirror plug back to allow the mirror body to be removed from the door.

Next I popped the mirror glass out of the towing mirrors, (sorry no pics of doing this) but it is simple. The glass slides away from the truck, i.e. the driver's side slides to the left and the passenger's slides to the right. It takes a little force to pop them out. Disconnect the terminals for the heated mirror feature. Remove the rubber bump stop on the front of the mirror and set aside.

Next I used some scotch brite pads to rough up the black textured plastic on the mirrors. After doing this, I used rubbing alcohol and a lint-free rag to remove the dust and any contaminants.

I then used Dupont A-2330S Plastic Adhesion Promoter. This is an aerosol primer product that helps the paint to stick to the plastic. Coat the entire mirror surface that is to be painted.

After the 25 minute flash time, I mixed up the 1:1 ratio of Dupont Chroma Base paint to the Dupont 7160S Basemaker, and sprayed the mirrors in a series of three coats, allowing 5-10 minute flash times between each coat. Don't forget to switch the mirrors between the 'towing' position and 'normal' position so as to not miss any of the surface area that is hidden when in either of the two configurations.

After a 30 minute flash time, I sprayed the mirrors with two coats of clear coat, allowing a 10 minute flash time between coats. The clear coat mixture is two-part. There is a 4:1 mix ratio of Chroma Clear Dupont G2-7779S (4) to Chroma Base 7765S Activator (1)

I let the coated mirrors cure in a heated area over night before handling.

The next day, I reinstalled the mirrors by reversing the removal process of the mirrors and door panel.

Be sure to wear all the required personal protective equipment when spraying the paint and clear coat. At least gloves and a respirator…the fumes are pretty harsh, especially if you spray in a confined shop with less than adequate ventilation!

Hope this helps any do-it-yourselfers who want to color match their mirrors to their truck!

Check out the 5th paragraph down in my orginal post. They just slide into 4 locking slots. Pull them outwards, and they will pop out of the slots. Then just disconnect the wires if you have heated mirrors.

It was just a plain old siphon feed campbell hausfield operating at around 30 psi (if I remember correctly). I'm not sure what tip is in it...just whatever it came with. This was my first time painting, so I just sprayed some on a piece of cardboard until I got a satisfactory pattern.
