I was looking into this and the body shops are telling me that there is too much silicone in the plastic for the paint to stay on (for a long time anyways). Thought on this?

if u use the adhesion promoter and etch primer like he did it will b fine. the body shops dont like 2 do b cause if it does chip u will want it fixed. they dont want 2 doit 4 free. the way he did it it will maybe outlast the factory finish! BTW very nice looking job!!!

Time will tell how it lasts, but the guy I bought my supplies from said there shouldn't be a problem as long as I scuffed the plastic and put a good coat of adhesion promotor down. Not to toot my own horn, but it came out really well....better than I thought it woud. I am not worried about chipping/flaking any more than I am on the rest of the factory finished paint.

I think that the reason the body shop doesn't want to do it is because, as jetfuel said, they don't want to warrenty it.

.

Adhesion promoter for plastics. Etching for bare metals.

Look, as long as you give it a good sanding and a really good cleaning automotive paints will stick! I would wash with a scrub brush and Dawn OXY dish soap. Then you MUST RINSE RINSE RINSE! HOT HOT water. Once dry, do not handle with bare hands. You must use a powder free latex or nitrile glove. Do not set the parts down on anything other than clean work surfaces. Hang them and then you should give a good through cleaning with Acetone and a new sponge while hanging. Once that is dry you can do the next step which I recommend from experience. Heat gun the entire part. Get it warm enough to open up the pores of the plastic and singe any lint or sponge flakes that you may not be able to see. DO NOT get the plastic hot enough to become shiney or smooth looking. Then liberally pour acetone over the pieces to rinse them again. Wait for them to dry, about an hour, acetone evaps really fast.

Now, using a hair dryer to preheat the part to warm to the touch you can begin applying your adhesion promoter. Just a light misting that gives full even coverage is all that is needed. Do not go over board here.

Follow directions on product for dry time, Then apply paint.

Paint should be about two to three coats. Go with your paint manufacturers directions from here on out.

Do this and I assure you that your paint will last as long as the paint on your rig! Remember that paint is just that. It will scratch and fade over time depending on how you take care of it. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I'm going to go ahead with this as I am doing some fender flares and interior pieces. Might as well do it all at once.

RedRum & bkjeffrey, thank so much for all your help.
