bad running and cutting out on a 3.9l 4cyl cummins
I have a bandit 250xp chipper with a 3.9L 4 cyl engine. It ran great and has more power than the chipper itself can handle but today it started cutting out and dying down. I pulled the PTO out and it sat there spittin and spuddering barely running. I am honestly thinking it's the fuel filters being clogged. I havent checked it yet cause i just got back but does that sound like what it may be? I know out kubota tractor did that and ran real bad but then after it sat for a couple hours it started back up (as everything loosened up in the filter) This one still fires gives a big puff of black smoke and shuts back off. Just looking for some ideas before i check it out.
Could be something simple like a plugged filter... Always the best place to start!
Then from there, start looking at the more expensive things, like lift pump, injection pump, ect.
Is it a p-3000 pump (inline pump like the p-7100 for the 6bt) or a VE rotary style?
We have had some strange issues with our p-3000 pumped 3.9s, At certain RPMs and a certain load the engine starts bucking and jumping around like crazy. We have had several guys from cummins come and look at these engines and nobody can figure out what it is...

How do i tell the diference? Im pretty sure it is the VE rotory style. Cause the p-3000 looks like my P-7100 With the lines out the top right? This one has the 4 lines coming out the back in a square. I'll check the filters and all first but how are the VE rotory style pumps? Do they go bad often?
Lack of fuel from a plugged fuel filter would make it lose power under load. Air in the lines would make it run worse at lower rpm usually, but especially at idle. A bad air filter would make it make poor power, and smoke excessively, but shouldn't have a significantly rough idle unless it's really bad. I would lean towards air leaking into the supply line, but it's sorta a guess with the info given.

The VE has the pressure hoses coming off the back. The P pump has the hoses coming off the top in a straight line. The old style pumps should last a long time. In miles… they could go 200K mi if the filters are good.
I have a feeling that is a fuel supply problem. Ether your filter is VERY clogged… or your lift pump is going bad. The only reason I say that is because you get black smoke on start up, and it starts. Normally, if the injection pump is on its way out… you will get hard starts, and white smoke.
On the back of the VE pump is a wire connection.
Make sure it is tight.
If it vibrates it can do as you describe.
If you are getting a puff of smoke on start up, I doubt it is fuel issue.
Another question I put the fuel filters on (and new lines cause mine were shot) Now i pushed the little primer on the side of the lift pump and i hit it a few times and it didn't feel like it pumped up. Yesterday it had a firm push now it doesn't feel like its doing anything. Is that normall? Does it take a long time of nothing to pump it? I would just fire cause i filled the filters and lines before i put them on so there shouldn't be much air at all but now i went to crank it and it doesn't have voltage to somewhere so i need to figure that out now (if you don't know me I tend to have alot of bad luck all at one time)
We change the fuel filters twice a season and blow out the air filter at the begining of every day in our chippers..replace them ever year regardless the condition.
check the solenoid on the back of the gauge cluster.. since the damb things vibrate so much some times they will break right off. def start there with the voltage problem though
Running better than ever. Had a combo of problems. I changed the fuel filter and primed it(At first when it didn't feel like it was doing anything was cause it was on the high lobe of the pump u had to turn the engine over a little) As for the startin one of the wires for the disconnected safety's was pulled out. It runjs great the fuel filters were really dirty but it may have been that safety wire being disconected and the vibration made it cut out. Also the wire on the fuel pump for shut off was loose to so it was about every problem you could think of working against me. But it's good now better than good it's a cummins
Thanks
