Oil Change Procedure???

I just purchased my first diesel and I need some clarification on a few things because I haven't had a chance to pick up a service manual yet. Is the oil change procedure the same on a diesel as it is on a gasoline engine? For instance do you let the engine warm up before draining the oil or do you drain the oil when it’s cold and the oil is settled down in the pan? Do you put fresh oil in the filter before you install it or not? Does anyone know what the oil change capacity is on my 2004 5.9 CTD? Thanks guys!

The oil will flow out better if it's warm. It's good to fill the filter with oil before installation, (I do) and oil capacity is 12qts. total, filter and all.:thumbsup

sweet...all the tips you guys mentioned are things I already do for the gasoline truck...just wanted to make sure it was the same with the diesel. I'm also gonna replace the fuel filter while I'm at it though I'm not sure exactly where it's located.

Use a bucket to catch the oil-not one of them fancy "oil catching" receptacles. It WILL come out fast once that plug is out!

Had a little haz-mat situation-learned my lesson:thumbsup

HAHA Funny you mention that, my 14 qt oil pan, (you know the one with the hole in the center and drain spout on the side) can just BARELY can keep up with the flow comeing out. Always kinda freaks me out when the oil comes right up to the lip.
