Exclamation 5.9 vs 6.7

I have a 2004 6speed 5.9..... I am looking to get a new truck soon and want to know which motor to get. The 5.9 or the 6.7. I went to the dealership today and talked to the salesman and he said that the 5.9 is retired!!! What the hell? We do alot of towing of cattle, hay, and things like that and i want to know what you guys think? Is the 6.7 good with "farm diesel", is the 6 speed auto as good as the 6 speed manual? The basic goods about what you gus know and hear..... I have heard nothing but bad things about the 6.7, atleast from those of us who work our trucks to death..... Thanks guys

I don't think a 5.9 will ever retire! That said, they aren't putting them in new trucks anymore. The 6.7's are a beast but they are choked out and by the emissions crap. Some have problems, lots of problems. Some don't. The fix seems to be to remove it and hope you don't get caught. It seems like the 07.5 have more problems than the 08's. You might just wait a little longer on the 6.7, I dunno.

Keep the truck you have. You have the best combo If you have to have one of the new ones - wait until the market bottoms out, then get some ca$h from another source and go get the 6.7 if you have to, but don't get rid of the 5.9 6 speed

I have the 6.7 with auto and love it. I too have a little place out here in West Texas. I have never had a CEL and she pulls like a dream, bone stock too. Livestock, tractors, 5th wheel trailer, and feed and the auto has held up to it all up to 23k miles so far. There is a guy in the 6.7 General section that put 155k on his auto before he lost the tranny pulling loads around 40k. They report idling to be a problem and I'm sure it is, but when I am out on the ranch the truck never shuts off all day, I think the ones with problems don't run down the highway or pull heavy loads on a regular basis. There are deletes that are popular for the 6.7, I'll wait till I'm out of warranty to do any adding or subtracting of parts, everything is working perfect to this point.

the common rail 5.9's need to idle up to prevent cylinder wash on extended idles

Look for a LOW mileage 06/07 with the 5.9.

There are alot of them out there- and by low mileage I mean 20K or less.

I found mine with 8,600 miles (it sat at the dealers till Jan 08- still has the 3year 36k warranty from that date)
