they get 20 miles to the gallon but they drive like a 90 year old

Yup. I can get 20-21 on the highway driving 65mph. As soon as I hit 67-68, it drops to about 18mpg. Just around town and back and forth to work I get about 17.5mpg. All hand calculated. These trucks really vary alot. Try really pussyfooting around for a week. And don't go over 65 on the highway. See if that makes a difference. Get a programmer of some kind. That will help some too.

when should the valves be adjusted???

03 2500 SLT 4x4 ,std cab,5 speed,volant air,flow muffler, quadzilla mpg mod,afe intake,1"taller tire,50hp sticks(OUCH ),2-stroke oil,fitch.best 26 mpg empty,22 mpg 2000 lbs load,18-19 mpg pulling 5000 lb.240,000 miles now.10,000 between oil,original IP.25%wvo.

not quite sure. i've heard many different intervals-every 30k-every 50k-every 100k. so i'm not really for sure but when i had my truck fixed last week they adjusted the valves so i'm good.
