Short trips with a diesel

Is it as bad as some say it is, Or should you let the engine warm up first.

well good, bad or indifferent. I start mine up, once the oil pressure comes up to normal I put it in reverse and back out...drive it easy (keeping it under approx 10psi boost) till the temp gauge comes off the 140 then I might tend to get on it a little harder and it is only a matter of few blocks til it is at full temp...then "mat it" any time after that!

I let mine run for 5-10 minutes and just take it easy until the temp comes off 140.

in the warmer months i let it idle for 1-2 minutes but in the winter i usually wait 5, then drive easy till the temp comes up off the 140 mark.

Well, everyone has different opinions on these kinds of things, but one thing is for certain, do not let it sit and idle for more than 10min or so!

Personally, if its above 10c or so, i give it 30sec or so @ 1250rpm then sputter down the road till the temp is up. if the temp is below that, ill give it a couple minutes @ 1250rpm and do the same, sputter on down the road till the temp is up before walking on it!

I drive my truck everywhere (car is too much of a pig on gas and so is my other truck) that includes the half a block trip from my house to work in the morning!

I definatly noticed especially in winter letting it sit an idle eats up a lot of fuel but i usually sit there for a minute winter or summer then just drive off real slow till the engine temp gets off of 140. Plus i think it definatly warms the truck up faster. I didnt have my exhaust brake last winter so i am curious as to how quick my truck will warm up with high idle and the exhaust brake on.

If the engine is at operating temp or even in the range and I am running in somewhere I will just shut it off. Cummins built these engines pretty well.

It could start wetstacking, if the air temp is too cool the combustion won't get high enough to burn all the fuel and some could leak down the sides of the cylinder and get into the oil. Prematurely aging the engine. The easiest way to avoid that is high idle.
