Foil heat shield: how tough is it?

I just finished my 4" exhaust install, which required some additional fitting because I used a 51" Donaldson. After everything was welded up, I went to tighten the downpipe and noticed it was just barely kissing the heat shield foil on the firewall - not really depressing it, just kissing it. So, is the foil/fiberglass (or whatever fabric is behind the foil) pretty tough stuff or does it need a decent airgap to prevent hotspotting and burn-through? Anyone else have a downpipe that touches the foil and are you problem free?

Thanks,

-Aaron
