Weird problem

I had the cruse on 70-75 down the freeway couple days ago, i had my edge on 4 and i wasn't stepping on it hard before hand or anything then all the sudden it felt like i went over one of those bumps when you cross a bridge on a freeway( kind of the jerky bump), my cruise control shut off,and i slowed down to about 55-60 almost instantly, then it revved back up, made a pop and i looked in my mirror and there was a pitch black puff of smoke that came out the stacks. The cruise control never came back on, but i stepped on it, and it seemed fine. I turned the edge back to stock and pulled off the next exit and looked under the hood and whatever and everything seemed fine..

Bad diesel? What could it of been? it hasn't happened for a week now but it kinda had me worried..
