Online Diesel School??

I was wondering what everyone, especially diesel mechanics, thinks on taking diesel automotive classes online. The reason I am asking is I am contemplating taking an online diesel course because there is nowhere near where I live that I could actually take hands on courses. Also would taking the online diesel course and going to an actuall automotive tech school help.

Sorry for all the questions, I have been thinking of one day opening a diesel shop where I live and I like to do things right, as in know about the things my business does.

Any help and advice is well welcomed, and I appriecate the time and effort to read and reply to these questions.

You need hand-on experience to work on diesels. Online alone will not give you the skills you need. Not the same as a college degree.

I agree Splash.

I've been messing with Diesels since I was 15. Oh that was 45 years ago. . . Hvae been heavily involved in Mopar cars all my life and on my 5th Dodge Diesel.

But as said, book learning is good, but most people learn more through the anaylog method. Hands on.

If you are good with your hands and able to apply the book to the hands, then you havea fighting chance at it.

If you are thinking of persuing diesel machanics as a profession, then by all means start the on line school and see if you can get a job in a shop.

Diesels are actually pretty simple when you get down to it. There's no ignition for one thing. But the internals are basically the same as a gas engine. It's just a matter of learning how to set them up.

It's never too late to learn. That's why I am here at this forum, learning about all the modern diesel systems.

Thanks for the replies and advice.

Polaraco, I am actually only 25 but have my general AA degree and am going for my bachelor's in accounting but I have always had a yearning to go and get my automotive degree, but now diesel becuase they are the greatest and will be around for a while.

I have thought about finishing my bachelors degree and taking an online course for diesel mechanics and when I get done with my bachelors go to an automotive tech school for regular automotive. Unfortunately there are no diesel tech schools anywhere close to me or I would do that.

I feel, I will be going to school for the rest of my life because there is always something out there I want to learn about.

yeah, it says it in fine print on your loans. "deferment length for student=unlimited"

economic hardship=2-3years
maternity leave=6-8 months
etc.....................

I will probably take the online course once I get my disbursement for my loan. I think it will be funning paying to the class with the loan I am getting for other education, but might as well make use of it that way instead of just pissing it away.

Just remember you'll be counting push rods, Not beans.

That's an interesting combination. May I suggest, go with your passions. Are you passionate about crunching numbers, or are you passionate about working on engines? Which ever you like to do and pursue, you will be good at. You have to like what you are doing.

Honestly, I made that mistake. I was almost 40 when reality slapped me in the head. I liked what I was doing, and good at it, but I like what I am doing now and even better at it. Now I make a very good salary, have good people working for me, and a retirement plan when it's time to sell.

That is my problem polaroca, I enjoy both. But that my change once I get into the upper level class. But I might be leaning more toward automotive and diesel because I would rather work on mine and my wife's vehicles than pay someone, I am constantly trying to guess what is wrong with vehicles when the are "acting up", and I am always helping friends, when I have time, fix their vehicles.
Shoot I may have just answered my own question.
