Here's the problem I've got 300 gallons of diesel I got from a friends home oil tank a year ago. I was going to burn it in my waste oil heater in the garage, but I have too much waste oil left. Now that fuel is so expensive I wanted to know if I could use it in my truck. I've had it in barrells for a year now, how do I know if it's bad?
I'd think twice. Condensation, temp change etc. It could have fungus and almost certainly lots of water. IF you ran it I would run 20% or so of the old fuel and run a double dose of fuel treatment. Still you risk the fungus thang.
My 2 cents.
you wouldnt have to worry about water in it cause it will separate. but i would still do a 50/50 or 20/80 (old/new) mix. wish my friends would give me free diesel.ray:
The diesel smells old or moldy but it looks okay I was thinking when I pump it out it goes through a filter maybe that would clean it enough then mix it 50/50. What do you think?
I don't want to seem cheap but its about $1300 in fuel and I could burn free used oil in my waste oil heater and my house is gas I'll feel stupid if I screw up my truck also I'm a mechanic I worked at a Dodge dealer for 10 years I think I'll filter it a few times until I think its clean then use it 50/50 thanks for your replys
i had a buddy run a tank of old diesel and he picked up the alge about six filters and tons of addit its starting to clear up it was contaminating the new fuel and was almost like an endless cycle
Treat it with some biocide, let it sit for 24 hours and filter it well. I've run 20 yr old fuel with no ill effects, but I did take the time to filter it as above.
At one of our camps we had about 500,000L of diesel fuel that has been sitting in tanks at the tank farm since the mid 80's when they shut down the project. Its the ugliest and most rotten smelling diesel i have ever seen in my life but wow does it ever work good. For fuel thats been sitting around 20+ years i would have thought that the only thing it was good for was burning in the oil drip stoves but the old cat loves it (old JD350C that had been sitting out there since they shut down). Being such an old engine it probably wasnt designed for ULSD and runs like a bag of crap on it.
Diesel is a totally different beast compared to gas, i bet if those tanks were full of 20+ year old gas a guy could drop a grenade in it and nothing would happen
So how did this turn out for the OP? I bet some biocide and some good fuel treatment and it will be fine.
