Tranny and motor changes over the years

Hi,

So I am starting to look for a Dodge cummins truck. From what I have heard the 96-98 or so had lots of tranny troubles which led me to wonder if anyone can list the trannies avalible by year, so I can choose the truck based on the tranny I want it to have.

I also know that some time ago they switched from the 12 vavle to 24 valve motor. What year did that take place? How about when the switch was made to electronic vs. mechanical injection.

Anything else I should look for or avoid in looking?

Thanks

God bless...

Mark

BTW, I am wanting to run it on veggie oil, so if there are changes that will effect that, it would be great to know what year to get or avoid.

Also watch out for the infamious 53 block on the early few years of the 24v. They tend to crack. Mine just did. POS!!!

Hi,

Man sorry to hear about your block. How does one tell if the truck in question is a 53 block?

I'm curious is the 47RH/Re transmissions any good? I know the 727 was a really good trans and lasted a long time. (A freind of mine at church actually worked at the dodge plant in IN in the mid to late 80's and the engineers kept coming in with pretzeled output shafts, so they kept having him make them harder in the hardening process and they solved the problem. He finally found out that they were testing the trans with the Cummins and then the pretzel shafts made sense to him. Ironically he now owns a 2005 Ram Cummins)

thanks

Down low on the driver side of the engine toward the front there will be a big 53 casted right into it. The numbers are about 1" tall. If there are just a bunch of numbers you don't have one. My new one is like that.

Hi,

So what years were the 53xxxxxxx blocks put into? Where does the crack happen? I called Cummins and they said it was on the outside of the block and lead to an oil leak. (Fortunately not to oil in the water or vice versa) Is there a stop gap solution or repair to the block if it does crack rather than tossing it?

Thanks

God bless...
