If you weren't pedeling it hard, that is excessive. Under normal light throttle, it should have shifted between 1500-2000. Lighter throttle will get it even lower. Hard, full throttle will see it shift clear up at the red line. That's normal. It's giving you all it's got! Hang on

So, here are my questions after my searches: What does the number after the year on a truck represent? Like: 2005.5? Month of build? Also, I just orded a triple pillar mount for my 05 (pyro, boost, tranny) should I also get a fuel pressure guage or does the 05 have a pretty stable vp44 (that's a fuel pump right)? My truck is stock for now with 30k miles on it.
Congrats on the new truck and keep reading! You are gonna like your new truck!
I will recommend you get the fuel pressure gauge. While your CP3 is not as easily harmed by lack of fuel, it can still be damaged by it. If nothing else it will help you tell when your lift pump is bad or the fuel filter is clogged.
The .5 that a lot of guys put on the year of their trucks is just to narrow down the specific changes on their truck. Seems that about every 6 months or so, Dodge changes a lot of things on these trucks. Take for instance the '07. Early '07s came with a 5.9L. Later in the year they came with the new 6.7L. Usually the changes are pretty small, sometimes they are bigger.

Oh, you guys! Boys will be boys! Seriously, just remember to not get into trouble (or to get any of the rest of us in trouble). You hear more and more often of how guys are getting tickets for smoke. Use it sparringly and we'll be able to keep doing it longer without the yelling and gnashing of teeth......

Got my first diesel.

All the reading I have been doing is confussing me. I have a 92 IC CTD 4x4. What/where is the starting point?

Is there a better oil to run?
How about oil filters?

I saw something about BHAF (air filter, so you know I know what it means) and a good place to order it, but now can't seem to find it.

Gauges
pryo
boost
fuel pressure?

What is the dowel pin? I keep reading on changing the dowel pin and can't seem to find out what it is.

I just located a FSM for the truck and I figure it will have so of the info I am looking for.

Any info would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks
Chris

i posted this thread yesterday about getting a more clear picture on of these compound turbo setups you all use.

Hey everyone! newbie looking to learn!

just trying to make sure the concept i have running in my head is correct or not and if anyone with build pics could post a few that show your compounds in detail.

well i can atleast help out on the oil filters part. my experience is on gasoline engines, not on diesels so bare with me.

i like to go with WIX oil filters, go to any NAPA store, the NAPA brand filters are all made by WIX. WIX oil filters have all metal internals rather then most other brand which have a cardboard filler as the filtering piece. WIX also designs their filters to be performance specific, whether it be daily street using conventional oils, mid performance for those with mildly upgraded engines and running on lighter weight oils and then a gold line for those running legendary name holding engines running light weight full synthetic oils. though it doesn't matter if the engine is performance based or not or what type of oil you are using, each type of filter can be used regardless. each type just has different flow rates, the higher the grade, the higher the flow rate.

then again, i don't know about diesels. but i will say, when i changed over to WIX filters, it took about 3 oil changes and my oil stayed so clean that i sometimes actually have to use sun light to see the glare of the oil just to check it's level... bad stuff goes in the filter, and it doesn't come out p-e-r-i-o-d...

Welcome! Really just start where you want to. Getting good oil and filters is a great place. I would recommend Fleetguard filters and Delo 400 oil. There are others and as long as you use the top filters and oil, it is just personal preference for the most part. If you want to do some reading: 'google' up 'minimopar oil filter study' for some filter tech and you can go to 'bobistheoilguy' for some oil research...
You could get a BHAF from fleetfilters.com for a good price.
Those gauges look good unless you don't have a stick anymore; then you need a tranny temp gauge.
You refer to the Killer Dowel Pin fix. It is just putting a home made tab over the thing so it can't come out and damage your timing gears and housing. If you want to do it yourself, I can PM you some directions I got from another guy.....
Any more questions, just fire away.

Winter, welcome as well. Sorry you didn't get any answers to your twins questions. I wish I knew as much as you do about them! In fact, I thought about putting one on my Toy as well. I don't think I want one as it is just front wheel drive. I wouldn't want to drive on 'ice' all year around..... LOL

There is a complete 6.7L section on the forums page, give that a shot.

Here ya go:
First one is right here on our own site....
Air Filtration Results with Various Aftermarket Filters - A

This next one is a pretty good test. It is more 'scientific' than what AK Ram did; but what he did is still very valid and informative. There are those that may say what he did leaves too many variables open to alter his findings. I think the way he did it is what you would find in the 'real' world..... Anyway, here is the next one:
ISO 5011 Duramax Air Filter Test Report

You will also find some tests similar to what I have noticed on my own on a site called ' bobistheoilguy.com '. They aren't as 'scientific'; but, none the less, they do show how different filters can let more dirt in than others.

I'm not 'bashing' K & N by any means. They do let more air into your engine usually. I also still have at least two of their filters in use on different rigs that I currently own. I just figure the Cummins deserves better air filtration than what the K & N can give. While what oil and what filters a guy uses is a personal choice, I feel it should be made based on as much information and fact as possible and not on emotions or advertisements. Ever notice how they all have 'the best filtration'? That simply can't be true! It stands to reason as well that to get more air flow through the factory air box, you have to let more of everything pass as well.

I have removed my right side battery and am looking into finding the largest BHAF that I can physically fit in there. I currently have the BHAF that everyone usually uses. I seem to get about half of the dirt accumulation at the inlet to my turbo that I got with the factory air box and filter. My filter minder still trips most of the way with about half throttle, so I would like to get a bigger element and see if I notice any improvement.

HTH,
