Inline vs V Block

Not trying to start a war here; just curious if anyone has any insight as to why inline diesels are prevalent in some applications while V block diesels are prevalent in others. For instance:

• Most over-the-road tractors are inline
• It seems that most haul trucks are v-block (What are most dozers and loaders?)
• I believe most freight trains are v-block (diesel electric)

Can anyone think of any others? Why don’t over-the-road tractors use v-blocks (anymore)? Why don’t haul trucks & freight trains use inlines? Could it be space? Weight?

How would an engineer decide if a vehicle or piece of equipment should have an inline or v-block?

If you’ve read Diesel Power or watch a lot of YouTube you’ve noticed that the 6BT5.9 dominates the drags, the truck pulls, and the tug-of-wars. Plus they get better fuel mileage. That being said; why has Cummins developed two v-block diesels for the market while Powerstroke and Duramax haven’t developed an inline? Does any of this make sense?

To answer one of your last questions: Why hasn't Powerstroke invented an inline??

No need ,FORD OWNS CUMMINS ANYWAY, they already got an inline

Sorry, It just hasn't come up in a while.

Most loaders I have seen run inline motors. I work on the railroad "contractor" and almost everypiece of our equpiment has a inline motor in it. Most are cummins!! And on the powerstroke what I've seen here lately they've been havin enough trouble just trying to do their v-block hate to seen them trying to do an inline.

traditionally inline engines are used for torque, V style for horse power

Inline would probably be alot simpler to stuff into things then a V-Block.

Not to burst your bubble there, BRT, but Ford does not own Cummins as you have stated. They used to own a small percentage of Cummins back in the 90's, but Cummins did a stock by-back and bought out Ford's shares. Therefore, Cummins is in fact its own company, with no parent company. Just thought I'd clear up that misconception.
