most of the large "v-block" engines are essentially two of their smaller inlines mated together, forming a "V". this is done for packaging reasons.

Like someone else said, inlines are for torque and V's are for HP. Now with a locomotive, they use a V style for horsepower to turn the main generator. Then it uses electrical energy to turn the traction motors in the trucks underneth it. So the electrical energy is what make the locomotive move and give it it tractive effort. But some older Baldwin, Fairbanks Morse, and I think Alco locomotives did use inlines in them for a powerplant.

Also the I4 doesn't have as smooth of a power delivery as an V6, I6, V8 etc.

And who wants an I4 in their truck? I get enough grief from my Powerstroke and Duramax friends over the 6 cylinder 'tractor' engine in my truck.
I gotta say, I wouldn't mind having an I4(diesel of course) in a halfton pickup. Just think, 1/2 ton short bed 4x4, I4 with some serious low end torque for some great rock crawling! They can give me grief all they want, but they wouldn't want to hook up would they...

Also why are they going from the cast iron head to the aluminum head?

Ford purchases cummins motors for medium duty trucks, have for a long time, they do not own any portion of cummins. sorry to burst your bubble

It appears the majority holder is STATE STREET CORPORATION. So you can all start saying "State Street Corporation owns Cummins!" Nobody will know what you're talking about but at least you'll be correct.
Repo; see above.

Inline delivers more torque because it can provide a longer stroke of the piston over V-block. Better fuel consuption because of 2 less firing cylinders than the V-blocks. They will also wear more evenly because their vertical.

V Blocks do fit into a smaller space, weigh less, and because of shorter stroke rev-up faster. Also a shorter crank shaft and cam shaft is stronger. They do contain more moving parts to make them function so whyever one would want to use it is beond me. ??

May have to do with a patented design and the only way other companies can compete was to have a different design.

well most every diesel engine i see other then power stroke and duramax are in lines. i dont think i have ever seen a big rig with a v motor. i know there out there but i would think cat and detroit are more popular with the inlines. i beleive that inlines make more torque because of the strait up and downward force of the piston. if you where to take a twenty pound weight hold it over your shoulder and do push it up and down its a little harder to push up but comes down hard as well. well take a 15 pound hold it at a 45 degree angle from your chin and move it away from you and towards you. its a little easier to push away and doesnt wanna come back as hard. you change your weights because in a 6 cyclinder i would think that the piston and connecting rod as well as the counter weights are heavier then on a v8. ..... torque is a twisting force so the harder that piston comes down the harder the crank is going to turn.
