No bubble busted.
I was DIEHARD Chevy til the original Powerstroke came out, the good old 7.3.
Had that til I got this Dodge and couldn't count the folks that said" Well you know Ford owns Cummins"
But there are some that get fired up on this subject.
Personall, I just want something that smokes and I get to use the green nozzle at the station.

This appears to be the case. Haul trucks haul hundreds of thousands of pounds. The motors range from v12 to v24. Why a v-block? If a v-block is typically more HP oriented; then why are they shooting for HP over TQ when they haul that much weight?

These are the owners of Cummins. Click the link and you'll see - No Ford.

CMI: Major Holders for CUMMINS INC - Yahoo! Finance

It appears the majority holder is STATE STREET CORPORATION. So you can all start saying "State Street Corporation owns Cummins!" Nobody will know what you're talking about but at least you'll be correct.

I've seen big diesel v-block generators; I think it sort of comes down to packaging - when the displacements gets to a certain point you can get more cubic inches in a better footprint with a v-block than a inline... imagine a inline 12 or 16 cylinder and I'm sure it has been done.

A member on one of the other sites (a v-block diesel site) stated rather dogmatically that the only reason inline engines are used is for in frame rebuild purposes, not sure how qualified that person is to make that statement but it got me thinking about it for a few minutes.

Another person told me that the inline 6 is inherently balanced and 'vibrates' less than 90 engines even when balance shafts are used.

Simplicity also plays a factor - take a look under the hood of a Duramax or Powerstroke truck and try to find the engine in the maze of plumbing and wires, I'm sure it is easier and quicker to build and install a Cummins in a Dodge than either of the other two.

I agree with everything above. I've heard from other sources that "big" inlines have just never been developed.

The "space" thing is a point I was after too. The Dodge is built "around" the 6BT5.9. I've heard it's not easily fit into other pick-ups; though their V8's would fit easily into a Dodge. I feel the same holds true w/ large equipment.

Why would Cummins release two v-blocks for Dodge as opposed to something like the 4BT3.9? More sporty like the 6.0 PSD?

Probably so that Dodge doesn't have to redo the suspension and frame designs to accommodate the new engines.

I've heard that the new 4.5L Duramax was designed to fit into the same space as the existing gasser engines and use the same mounts so I would imagine that Dodge gave the Cummins engineers the same marching orders.

Also the I4 doesn't have as smooth of a power delivery as an V6, I6, V8 etc.

And who wants an I4 in their truck? I get enough grief from my Powerstroke and Duramax friends over the 6 cylinder 'tractor' engine in my truck.

thank you. im sooooooooooo sick of hearing how ford owns cummins. everyone always wants to argue with me about that.
