Question Gear Lock Toggle?

So I bought this truck from a guy that was dishonest with me from the get-go so i'm not sure he was being honest with me on this. There is a toggle switch that he installed that he told me was a Gear Lock used primarily for towing. When I flip the switch just cruising down the road I don't feel anything. However, when I was hooked up to my horse trailer last week I flipped the switch prior to putting it into drive and the truck died when I tried to accelerate. Any ideas what this might be? Thanks and sorry for the length...

It is probably a torque converter lock up switch. Drive down the road with the switch off and let it lock up. Let off the pedal and your rpm's should drop pretty quick. Then do the same except when it locks, flip the switch. Your rpm's will act like a manual transmission and slow the truck down. Unlock it before you stop or you will kill the engine. You can also let it shift from 2-od with it locked but it is hard on the tranny.

Thanks for the reply Whistler. I assume this switch is to be used primarily when towing a large load for deacceleration? So when you say "lock up", you mean let it settle into gear and then hit the switch? Also, what did you mean by 2-od? Something to do with overdrive I assume? Sorry for the silly questions.

Most guys use the switch to keep the converter locked when dynoing their truck or racing. The 2-od he is talking about is flipping the switch when you hit 2nd gear and it will keep the converter locked while the transmission is shifting through the gears while racing.
