Cold idling

I cut a broom handle to fit between the seat and accelerator. When I fix it in there, the engine idles about 1500. In the mornings I start the truck and put my stick there and go back inside for a couple of minutes.

Is 1500 too high when it's cold? I know it needs to idle higher but what is "too high"? After all, that is the purpose of idling it to get it warm, so you don't stress the motor too much driving it cold.

Another question, is the mileage worse when the engine is cold? During the week it never gets to full temp before it's shut down.
Thanks!

I run the high idle up to 1000 for the first min. or so , then bump it up to about 1500. Try to get your engine warm before shutting it down due to condensation. I live less than a mile from my store , so I let it run when I get to work .

1200 works well. Im like you i dont get all the way up to temp when going to work. plugging it in at night and idling at 1200 for 5 to 10 min will have it nice and toasty. With the smarty ill just start up and walk away if it will be cold enough, but not if its been plugged in, so i use the broom handle trick. i took the rounded end and put it on the seat support and then put the flat end on the pedal. that way i can adjust it by the position i place the handle on the seat support.
