Higher Mileage Cummins?

I'm looking at buying a truck as a DD in the summer and the Ram is front runner (01-02, newer body style).
My budget is about $10,000 and I'm hoping I might be able to find a Cummins equipped truck that meets my requirements (Quad cab, 4x4, manual would be nice but would settle for an auto, same with SB but I can deal with the LB).

However this budget means I'll be looking at a truck with higher mileage (100k miles/kilometers or more). Will this add any kind of unforeseen problems that I should be aware of? Any other issues to watch out for or things to check?

Theres always going to be issues, even when you think you've looked thoroughly. 10k is a good budget on buying a used dependable cummins. Test driving is very important. Then comes inspecting the motor, checking for leaks, blowby, etc. There are lots of good threads on here about issues and things to look out for. Just gots to look. Good luck man

Thanks!
I've found a couple 03-04s in my price range so that makes me happy. I've talked with a friend who owns one and he's given me the low down on somethings.

Can't wait till I've got some time off from school!

You'll be much better off with an '03 or newer rather than a 98.5-'02 due to the failure prone lift and injection pumps.
I wouldn't buy a '98.5-'02 unless it had an aftermarket fuel pressure gauge or recently replaced pumps.

I'm actually thinking I might buy my buddy's when the time comes, he's looking to down grade to something small as he doesn't need the big truck anymore.
It's an 03 2500 SLT, has 251k km on it (will have maybe 260k by summer), auto, 4x4, Quad Cab, Long Box. He's replaced rear DS, hanger bearing and u joints, front wheel bearings, front ball joints, all 4 brake calipers, replaced the lift pump with an Air Dog 1000 - all within the past 2-3 years of owner ship. Only mod to the truck other then the pump is a 4" TBE. Regular service is all up to date and it's got no leaks.
He wants $10,000 cause that's what he'll owe on the truck by then and he'll even drive it to the island for me which saves me money on fuel and the ferry.
The only thing wrong with the truck, it's frackin Silver!

How was it explained to me? Oh yah,
100,000 miles
1st gen=1st oil change
2nd gen = engine half life
3rd and 4th gen = TBO (to be overhauled)
5th gen = never makes it past the first oil change without a CEL.
