I saw this guy take not just the silencer ring out but that part on the inside of the silencer ring as well. it was on a 6.7 but isnt this a needed piece to make good boost????? It looks like its actually part of the housing. You will have to scroll down and find the pics of it i cant figure out how to add them to this page-- its on Silencer Rings in Turbo? - TDR Roundtable

The silencer ring sure looks allot different than on the 5.9's. It looks like what you referred to as "the part on the inside" is a sleeve that was cast as one piece with the silencer ring(?) I wonder if anyone ever left the sleeve in when they remove the silencer ring (or if its even possible)?
You have to drill the rivets out on a 6.7 to get the silencer out. Everything I have read guys have actually lost power when they removed them. Most guys have put them back in after removing them.

Hello All,
I have done research all over the net for months on this subject, and I am sure there are others who may benefit from this information: As mentioned by Ram3500Dually, you have to drill out the dowels in order to do this PROPERLY. I'm pretty handy with cars and i have successfully repaired just about everything short of a cam removal or engine rebuild. I can't see how you can drill these out without taking out the turbo housing and that is definitely not to my taste. I studied the thing for a long time and decided I could drill out the visible dowel and discretely break the other 2 using a slide hammer tipped with a pilot bearing removal tool. It worked and it's out, but the dowels didn't break...the dowels took chunks out of the housing with them. I don't have any pictures because I am too embarrassed to show anybody what i did. There were metal shavings; I vacuumed them all out but I'm kind of paranoid that something got inside...Needless to say, if the turbo fails or the engine fails the dealer will see what I did and I am out $$$$$. An issue I am worried about is the stress I put on the turbo vanes when the inside of the ring pressed against them while I was flexing it. You can see what happened to me is the same thing that happened to the person on the pictures posted by 1JP. Notice on picture 3 how there are 3 little gouges on the top where the ring contacted the vanes? The dam thing is so close to these vanes that any twisting of the ring causes contact. I fear I have shortened the life of the bearings by doing this. IDK...I've done dumb things in the past and gotten away with it. I just wanted to post this reply to recommend to anyone else contemplating this project to NOT do it. If you have a good diesel mechanic on hand, well, bully for you. I've still young and I have some ba**s left, so I went ahead with this one. I love the sound it makes now and there's no noticeable power loss. Looking back, it's got 10K miles on it w/no problems. It's my girl, so I'll do what I want with her, eh?

Reason: Forgot to include my truck info
I havent seen the dyno sheets to prove it, but i have heard everywhere that removing the silencer ring on the 6.7's causes a loss of 25-50 hp. That piece sure looks different from the 5.9's.
I've heard more like a 10-14 hp loss... on the 6.7's
Mines gone but it's a 5.9 with no warranty, I couldn't tell a difference till the BHAF Was on anyways...

so I'm having a rough decade...... oh well.
that definitely looks like a piece that should stay in the turbo. Looks like it would definitely cause a power loss....but sometimes the sound is worth it :thumbsup

I've seen dyno sheets twice. One was a 24HP loss and the other truck was a 27HP loss.
I wouldn't be doing it to mine. That is one mod that Chrysler will for sure void your warranty for.
