New 5.9 Question

I have a new 5.9 which is my first diesel. When you first turn it on is it normal for the volt meter to jump up and down until it kind of warms up? And does this make a clunking type noise under the hood when the volts are dropping?

Thank you

Yes, It is normal. The voltage will go down after the circuit breaker kicks in, this is the grid heater turning on heating the air entering your engine. Then click/clunk the voltage will then start going up. It is the draw from the grid heater and the charging of the battery. The grid heater controls smoke/ emissions at start-up.

Turn the key to the on position for about five seconds before you fire it up. That gives the block heater and everything a chance to settle down.
