why is powerstroke...

Ok this is a serious question with definite answers needed.. Why is the powerstroke diesel such a bad engine? I mean nothing is worse than hearing a guy who is a dodge or chevy guy say the powerstroke is a horrible engine and then someone will ask why and they will say cause ford sucks.. So is the powerstroke engine really junk and why or is it just the whole debate between chevy, ford, and dodge guys. Everyone knows that cummins is at the top of the pyramid, but is ford really that bad.. I just wish the dodge tranny would be something to brag about......

I would own a ford over a chevy any day. I have two of them in my fleet of trucks. An 99 F550 with the 7.3 and 296000 miles with just a clutch, fourth gear fixed, and 3 injectors. the other is an 06 F350 with a 6.0 and 60,000 miles and nothing. Both have CAI, strait piped and programed. They wont pull with my dodges but they do the job well. I hot shot with them and most the loads i haul are in the 15,000 to 20,000 lbs.:thumbsup

P.s. The speedo quit in the 99 in april and i just hadnt fixed it, just ben goin by rpms, so its probly well into the 300,000 mark

The 7.3 was a great engine. The 6.0 is also a good engine it just had a lot of kinks when it first came out and had big problems with being chipped. It can be laggy off idle and surge under heavy pedal. But we have had more problems out of trannys than the engines with our fleet.

Nothing at all wrong with the 7.3. My Dad had 2 of them, a 97 and a 02. The 97 had 198000 miles on it when he traded it on the 02. Just got tired of rowin' the gears I guess. We have not had a problem out of either one. The Powerstroke is a great engine for a truck, whether it is a grocery-getter or a tow pig. The Powerstroke is just not as easy or cheap to make big power with. Most of it comes down to Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge, though.

In my experience, Ford parts have always cost more then Chevy parts and in some cases Dodge as well. That is one reason I personally do not care for Ford. Not to mention their trucks are pricey in comparison to the other makers.

I just drove one of the new F-350's with the new diesel in it. We just got it in at work. I can't say i was impressed with it but also I was not unimpressed. One thing for certain though, that engine bay is a NIGHTMARE. I would hate to have to work on one :fist:

I am not against Ford personally I just think they are over priced for both new and used and have yet to drive one that felt good to me. Also just to some google searches on the new engine and you will see there are a ton of problems with the new diesels. THats not totally Fords fault but it's in a Ford truck and that gives cause for people to dog Ford.

Our ranch truck is a 97 F-350. 228K rebuilt tranny twice, is the only main problem. Then the usual replacements.

Don't know much about the powerchokes, but my ole man had an old '86 6.9 E350. had 450,000 on it before the suspension completely fell apart. great truck other than the 4 trannys, and the roller lifter problems he had with it.

I've driven pretty much Dodge vehicles pretty much exclusively for 26 years. I'll get that out in the open up front.

I don't think PS's are junk. Ford sells more Diesel pick-ups than GM and Dodge combined. I don't particularly think DM's are junk either but I'm not a big fan of GMC or Chev pick-ups.

I like my 5.9 Cummins and the Ram is the wrapper that came around it. I have to admit that I really, really like the Ford's...my brother-in-law owns one with a PS and it's a great looking truck and it's nice inside and works just like it should.

Had I gotten as good a deal on a Ford or a Chev or a GMC, I'd probably be driving one of those right now. My dream truck would be a 5.9 Cummins (or a 6.7) in an 07 F-350.

Don't listen to 99.9% of what you read on the WWW, especially the negative stuff. People who make themselves feel good by bashing everyone else always get a wide berth from me. Also, cosider if Dodge's came with PS's and Ford's came with a Cummin's, what this and all the other boards would look like and what we'd all have parked in our driveways.

Peace-Out. <Stepping down off soapbox and slipping on Nomex suit.>

I agree that the fords are nice and look awesome.. except for the 07's.. they are extremely expensive though and you dont get your money's worth at all.. My buddy's 06 has a boost guage and a trans temp guage.. which is real nice. I just wish my dodge had something like that.. but it's got the cummins and that's all that matters. I had a dm a few years ago and I must say that i prefer the cummins.. just wish I had an allison..
