Hi Kevin....

My name is Dan, and I'm a lifelong bombaholic.

It started for me at an early age and, based on the collection my father has in his truck shop, is most definitely hereditary....

Knowing there are others suffering from this financially burdening condition is comforting. Thanks for the support.

Dan, glad you are here, I need yer support, I was wonnerin if your diesease started with bombing things like bi-cycles and remote controlled cars and the likes, My mom tells me I used to take my lil cars apart and mix parts with other toys, I can remember that very clearly. One time I got my dads lawn more really hot by mowing tall grass then I shut it down and topped the tank off with diesel just to see if it would run, I was after the diesel sound, the mower did work and still had bout the same power but smoked like a freight train, my dad thought the mower was on the downhill side, I told him we needed to add a stack to the thing. he wouldnt let me do it Remember those little high octane powered cox cars, I had a dunebuggie that I installed a bigger motor out of an airplane, I found a small gearbox to that gave me some tall gears, a friend and me took it up to the airport and let er rip, we had to kinna shove start the thing as it was way tall geared......anyway the dunebuggie was haulin it too fast and ended up in the ditch at around like 40 mph the crash was so violent I could hardly find any parts in the recovery mission.

I feel so much better now, thanks fer listening.

Cheers, Kevin

Definitely with bicycles and RC cars. I still haven't kicked the RC car habit, I'm in over the edge, lemme tell ya I'm a goner, probably beyond help.

At 13 years of age, bored during summer vacation, I put a '0' button in the PT pump of my dad's old 335 Cummins by myself. I probably should've told him I did it, but forgot to. Well he took the truck out at about 0400 and came home about 0600 all about the smoke & thought for sure somethin' was wrong. Well I admitted my sickness at that point & he wasn't but actually was pretty about his son carryin' on his legacy.

We raced cars at the local dirt track as far back as I can remember--I graduated up into sprint cars but sold all my stuff before I moved out here in 2000. Anyways around the 10th year of life I wondered how well a Snapper walk-behind mower w/ a 5hp Tecumseh would run on 110 octane Sunoco racing fuel. Well it ran pretty well--them indians like their alcohol (ooooo bad joke sorry)--anyways that was fun so I tried some of the special exotic concoction of "not approved by the rules" mix of xylene, toluene, etc that dad kept in the little black plastic jugs.....anyhow I figured if 1 quart of this stuff per 25 gallons of 110 Sunoco was good enough for the race car, then what the heck why not fill the whole tank of the mower with it.

Well first thing I learned is the stuff burns your skin pretty good. Second thing I learned is it eats paint---has a particular liking for Snapper red. Thirdly I learned that at 100% it tends to blow stuff up. Oopsy....

hehehehehe goodun man, I had a similar experience at about the same age, my older brother had a 125cc Hodaka combat/wombat??? funny lookin thing, anyway I drained all the gas from the tank and put in the whole quart of the cox fuel (octain unknown) so when he gets home from school and trys to take it for a ride ........he hits 1st gear all is fine but what the heck, then he hits 2nd gear and starts up on an unintentional wheelie and you guessed it the thing came right over on him, I was laughin me hinney off..........thats funney right there, I dont care who ya are.

My dad had an early 80's Mack Superliner lowboy tractor---had the big V8, can't remember exactly how big--never did keep up on the Mack stuff very well. Anyways it had an ether injection system on it for cold weather starts. The tractor originally was from Alaska.

Anyways if you pushed the button it'd give a 1 second burst of ether. The engine was wearing out and in the winter we relied more & more on the ether to get it fired up. All she ever did was pull the lowboy around so there were times she'd sit for a couple months before being started up.

Anyways dad was PO'd one day about it not firing off & mumbled something about "I wish that SOB'ing POS would just let go"..........Sooooooo, being the creative kid that I was--around 16 at the time--I bypassed the controller and ran the ether pump for about 30 seconds. hehehehe

Well she didn't blow up but awesome banging she made for about a minute was only overshadowed by the huge flames out the stacks.

Well dad freaked out but once she smoothed out he took her on a test run, all seemed well, and he cooled off.

Never again did he mention much about blowing engines up around me, but it never stopped me from trying.

A buddy of mine had a 62 Chev 1/2 ton 2x4 stepside............good lookin truck but the ol 292 was tired, his dad owned the Ford and GM store in town and was well off, he told Andy one day that when the 292 gives up the goast he had a V-8 327 to put in it and the mechanics would do the job for him........so you know where this is going, yep we drained the oil out of the 292 and proceeded to hotrod it around town, I am tellin ya we had a heck of a time wastin this motor, one tough cookie, yep we finally got-er-done and the 327 went in, we had a ton of fun with that truck yes we did.

Ain't it amazing how long an engine can run without any oil?

I am also a bombaholic. I bought an S10 pickup for driving back and forth to work. It was cheap and soon found out why. The poor little 2.8 soon gave up to a terrible death by rod through the block syndrome. Now for the fun part. I built a 305 for a friend of mine and he never picked it up so I used it in the truck. That was ok for a little while and I thought well this isnt any fun anymore. Thus leading to the little truck in my sig. I then decided to put a WELL built 350 in it and get started on a project for my son that is now 6. It is awesome to drive and the looks him and I get while driving it around with the dual 4bbl tunnel ram sticking through hood and the gear drive makin all of its noise, PRICELESS!!!! Well enough for now, got a few more for another time. Later

The bombing evolution as psted by ON 4-27-05 1:42 AM

Please allow me to enlighten my self with a SEMI-Rant life lesson.

Im in the BOMBING BLEW'S

And While stareing @ my broke down 35,000 + $$ truck Im wondering

Did I Do That

I do know I voided my warentee @ 20,000 and now with 42,000 its going to set me back about $850 before it will even run ...and it could of been $0 Im not complaining I knew what I was doing when I did it.

With my upgrades have I decreased the Longevity of my truck?

That is the reason I bought a CTD so it would last.

I know my TC would be the next week link so I droped $2000 on it and its in the garage ....too bad my ECM died .

I figger

$850 for the ECm
$2000 for the TC/Vb
$400 to have the TC/Vb put in ,,, including filter and fluid

Now lets say all that goes good

How long before my Input shaft breaks or something else ???

Why do I even have to worry about it ...I could be stock and know its going to last ,,,but NOOOOOO I have to have MORE,,MORE,,MORE to the sacrifice of what ......... EASE OF MIND........truck longevity....... Wallet.....????

There is no end to this bombing Nightmare/Dream for with every Bomb has its days and will it grow old to its owner over time.

So whats YOUR GOAL ???

My Personal goal is to bomb to the Plateau then Stop then to become one of these Ol' timers who always seem to be leaving because of us newer generation of CTD owners .. its sad that you guys leave we need you to help us along the path to the Plateau and to keep us from falling over the edge.

What is this Plateau ??

IMO 450 HP

Im sure everyone has there own opinion thats Cool but I personally think that 450 HP is the point between Longevity and Destruction

I have a 2002 CTD

I Tow hardly anything at all

Sometimes I haul a water tank

I drive 25 miles to work and 25 miles home thats my trucks job..

In all reallity If I could turn off 3 clynders and run on it for 300,000 miles than swich to the other 3 I would be cool... I dont need 450 Hp its just .............Fun .... I guess that sums it up.

I see the TDR ol' timers leaving every day and being replaced by 2 newbies and I see alot of newbies helping newbies on the 3rd gen forums because its all new to everyone .... Thats why I try to stay off the 3 gen forums they can be a bit touchy what with people helping people who know the same about there truck as the other guy... If i can help the 3 gen guys in anyway 99% of the time I PM the user to keep from being bashed .. the 3 gen'er need an ol' timer ... we all do.

My path so far on the limited bombing I have done has been very bumby TDR'er have saved me alot and there doing it right this second.

Grafic Man gave me a $90 SK for free and mailed it from canada .... I chose to go with a preformance VB so my friend HOLYSMOKES came and picked it up at my house with the quickness Smokes also was my relay between WORK and TDR when I was in CTD Trouble. Bob Wagner is sending me a loaner ECM ...thank GOD for Bob. Rock-N-Rammer has been my Guide sience I have joined I have contacted him on just about everything I have done to my truck and he is one heck of a guy ....lucky for me ...not for him...but his ECm died at the same time mine did so we call and cry into each others ear J Rose towed me with a chain for about 5 miles to the CTD shop , Timbeaux38 gave me tons of valuable info about my trany and some other things ,, LightmanE300 has been schooling me about Fuel Additives ever sence my DTR days ... and tons of help from alot of members

THANKS

Im sure you guys have seen my BOMBER page on my site HERE the whole purpose for that page is if you are in trouble anyway you can bet those guys will do what ever they can to help you out.

Group Hug

As mentioned 450 Hp is about the Safe/Danger Goal

Now you have to decide how to get there .........Out of all the possible ways (TONS) you can bet a TDR member will help you along your way and be there to bail you out when things get ugly.

I know I will read this thread next year and it will bring back memories of this tragic event and I will take many lessons from the Path I have Strolled down and just maybe I can lend a hand to you one Day.

When the Rubber meets the road just about any bombing you do up to 450 HP when something Breaks chances are it was going to break someday anyway IMO. No matter how you got to 450Hp .....well ... with in reason .

Now cross the Plateau and its down hill WONDERFUL if its not your daily driver not so good if it is .... take this note if its your only means for transportation dont get caught up in bombing to the point where Longevity has went out the window and has joined your path of smoke .

Truth be known for a 2nd gen to smoke like a 1st gen you will have to be Pushing a BOO-KUU of HP ...

As I was watching my boy play in the dirt the other day he was throwing up bits of dust and watching the wind take it away... the quest for SMOKE starts young I guess @ about 2 yrs old..... the path for smoke can be very twisted and cannot be as simple as just throwing dust into the wind.

You need to make a choise

What do you BOMB FOR ???

A lot of 2nd geners want 1st gen Smoke ... DONT DO IT

For the money you would have in your 2nd gen to make it smoke like that you can buy a 1st gen and just tare the hell out of it.

DONT BOMB FOR SMOKE

BOMB in reason to keep your truck for the purpose you bought it.

I am somewhere between Longevity and Destruction... I just dont know where for sure. As I see many members with 3 times the bombs I wonder is it reliable ??

Who's to say

Maybe An ol' timer

You seen Any ?

DM

Chad, your story is pretty much one of the main reasons I own 14 vehicles.

One can't do everything I want it to do & stay together.....plus I can't leave my grubby paws off perfectly functioning devices--gotta 'tinker' and end up having more broke down time than operating time.

All too often the perception on the 'net is that these 500hp, 600hp, 700hp+ trucks are daily driven machines that don't need any more maintenance than a 100% box stock truck. The truth is hardly that, and those who read from the outside looking in can sometimes be drawn into a false sense of security about modifying the pickup that they rely on for everyday transportation.

You know how many folks still believe trucks like Dave Mitchell's or the Haisley & Scheid trucks are running fairly stock Dodge drivetrains behind all that power? Lots.....mention the Crower clutch, drop box, Rockwells, etc to most of the TDR and you'll get a ??????? because unless it's talked about, most folks don't know about it.

Heck when Dave Mitchell blew up his clutch a few years back there was a giant panic about his Mitchell pulling clutch being unsafe-----when all the while the clutch in the White Dodge at that time had about as much in common with the dual disc pulling clutch he sells as I do with Tyra Banks.......

There is most definitely a point where the mods to a truck start affecting is temperment, it's reliability, and it's longevity.

I'm ranting here, but there's a lot that goes on in the world of internet bench racing and internet workshop modifying that ticks me off.....Sorry if this is a hijack.
