Buying my first dodge, i have some questions.

hi, im new to the forum, and am going to soon be buying a dodge. i have a few questions for you guys how have owned a few of these trucks.

1. i would like to get a 5.9L 6 speed manual, however as im sure most of you know these are impossible to find. if i buy the 5.9L automatic is the transmission horrible? is it worth sucking up the lost fuel milage and going with the 6.7 to get the better transmission?

2. if i buy the 6.7L and delete the egr and dpf am i going to get any where near the fuel milage of a 5.9L?

3. and finally is there a difference in the 6.7L from year to year, for example are the 2007 6.7L the same as a 2009 6.7L (any defects the first year they came out?)

4. any other advice will be greatly appreciated!

The truck is going to be used as a daily commuter and will also be used to pull a 5 tone float trailer two or three times a week. thanks for the help!

Dad's 06 megacab has the 5.9 with an auto and he pulls 23-24mpg all the time. Granted 80% of the driving he does is two lane highway at 65 mph.

If you buy a 6.7 and delete the DPF and the egr you will void the warranty and fail vehicle inspections. Of course the inspections is only a problem if you live some place that does it.

The auto is fine at stock to a little above stock power levels. Its the 21 century the mileage difference between the auto and the manual is probably not even noticeable. Especially depending on the gear in the axle. If the manual has 4.10 and the auto has 3.55 guess what the auto will get better mileage.

My main advice would be test drive a couple and pick the one you like driving the most. If you live in a big city do you really want to row your truck in stop and go traffic every day?

I have an 06 with auto. I`m not hard on it but the auto has 112,000 miles & shifts like new. I think the trick is to change the fluid & filter every 30,000. I don`t pull big loads or drag race but I use it like what it is- my work truck. I have to admit all the talk about these trans. being junk might have me a little more careful.
