Dodge Cummins or Ford Powerstroke

Why should I buy a Dodge Cummins instead of the Ford Powerstroke. I am going to buy a diesel truck in the near future. I am wondering if this forum is nearly as busy as FTE. I have a Chevy daily driver and am totally dissappointed in the truck and the Chevy forum I signed up with. I hear from Ford guys that the Cummins diesel is the best of the big 3, but it comes wrapped in a Dodge truck. The only Dodge I ever had was an 87 D150 with slant 6 and 4 sd OD.

Cummins. inline 6, less moving parts, great reputation for reliability, and power. Actually classified as a light medium duty engine, easy to get lots of power,

powerstruggle..... where do i begin. V8, sounds like crap, much harder to pull big power out of. Blow parts like crazy.

Tell us what years you are looking at for dodges, and i can give you some specific details, as well as problems to look for.

I have dirive both and just the get up and go of a Cummins is worth the price. A for may say they have more HP and TQ but look were it lands in the RPM range. Up in 2500 to 3500 RPM! What good does that do pulling a trailer? I will admit the interior of a Ford does fit me a bit better but I still like the interior of all the dodges. Plus a CTD gets better gas mileage, cant beat that!

The Ford guys are right on the Cummins being the best of the three engines. As far as the rest of the truck , I was told when I bought my first one that the tranny would puke on me....it never did , but I only ran it up to 40k and traded last June on this one. I have 25k on this truck with no tranny issues. Both trucks tow.....alot....the 04 had the Bully Dog pup programmer , this one has the Quad race box.

There are some things that I like above the Dodge , like the interior of the Ford , but as far as exterior , I think the Dodge looks awesome....the Fords not to bad on looks.....but the Chevy GMC stuff is just to "boxy" looking for me.

The only other weak link I can think of in the Dodge is the LP if you start adding fueling mods. The carter LP seems to have a little trouble feeding the rail if you add much fueling.

Chevrolet is not in the equation. The Duramax might be good, but the truck is buttugly. Did I mention the Chevy forum - stinks. This one has given me several posts already. I have been on the Ford Truck Enthusiast (fordtrucks.com) for years with my old trucks. That forum will post you to death. I've been asking about the differences of the 7.3 and 6.0s and I have a mailbox full. I never get more than 2 posts on the Chevy forum with little help in them. That makes a big difference.

How many generations do the Cummins have?

What is an LP? (New to the diesel world).

The LP is the fuel lift pump. From 05 to current , they are mounted in the fuel tank. Ther are 3 generations of the Cummins....ummm mabe four now with the 6.7.....not sure. Look on the main board hear and you'll see the boards broken down by gen.'s. I know nothing about the 1st and second gen's , and I'm still learning on the thirds.

Well we have a 7.3 powerstroke and a 5.9 Cummins sitting in my drive way. The 7.3 powerstroke, which ran from 1994.5-2003, is a very reliable and solid engine. However stock for stock the 7.3 can not hold a candle to my newer 5.9, my Cummins gets better fuel economy i get about 18.5 mpg to the heavier Ford's 16.2mpg. Either one is not bad for over three tons. As far as a daily driver my dodge is better, my dad's ford does a little better doing work such as plowing towing etc. Personally, I think a Chevy with a Dmax and allison would be the best daily driver, with the smoother ride and the most fuel efficient engine, based on reputation.

Bottom line you don't hear about people swapping powerstrokes into Dodges but on the other hand:

Either way you get a diesel, the best kind of engines on the road!:thumbsup

I got one of each, love em both, they both pull great, no matter what anybody says. If you go ford watch out for the 03 and 04 6.0 they had hit or miss problems, by 05 and later the 6.0 was great. The 7.3 has always been rock solid. The cummins is easier to make big power because ford has hydraulic operated injectors witch will require more money to go fast. I think it is personal preferance, either way you will be happy.

The cummins engine is built tougher it uses alot of the technolgy that they use for their big diesels. 1. cummins engines use grid heaters instead of glow plugs and therefore when its 50 degrees outside u dont have to crank on your truck for an hour 2. ease of under the hood access minor stuff on a powerstroke can be a nightmare they do all they can to cram that big pile of crap under the hood and u cant hardly get to anything on a powerstroke, look under the hood of a dodge and it looks like an 81 chevy 350 wide open bay, where as a powerstroke looks like the hood under a mini van u cant have easy access to anything. 3. you can get alot more power out of a cummins peformance wise... and lastly international uses cats cummins and detroits in semi's because well they make junk

Here's what I thought:

Ford - International diesel
Dodge - Cummins (of course)
Chevrolet - Isuzu Diesel

that is correct

gm uses iszu and before the duramx used detroit diesels a sub company gm owns.

ford uses navistar(crapistar) aka international

and dodge uses cummins, used in everything from pickups to semis to house boats to trains to generators in the house

Yeah that is right, in larger trucks f650 and up ford offers a Cummins motor...along with a Cat, C7 I think. None of the "big" three make their own diesel. Chevy is the closest owning a significant chunk of the DMAX engine project made in joint venture with Isuzu, who I think they either own a significant part, if not all of.
