Here's the thing, the Federal Government has really screwed up diesel engine for right now. Until the tecnology catches up I wouldn't purchase a new diesel, and if I was forced to I'd go with the Duramax, just because the engine has been made for a few years now, while the Cummins is 70-80 percent all new and the Powerstroke is all new, following a terrible engine that was only made to meet 04 emission standards, and was so bad was only made for 4 years and led to Ford and International filing half a dozen law suits against each other. You want a Ford, get a 7.3, made up until mid 03 model year. You want a Dodge, get a 5.9 made up until mid 07 model year. You want a Chevy/GMC get a LBZ made 06 to mid 07 model year and get the best transmission God ever graced this earth with. If you're going to tow a lot and don't entend on putting go fast parts on it, or putting half a million miles on it, get the Duramax, that tranny makes tows best. If you're going to keep the truck forever, get the older Ford, you get a good engine and truck, except for the tire eating twin I beam, and it's already took the most depreceition. If you want a almost new truck to modify, and put 500,000 miles on it, get the Dodge. I do know a few people that had transmission problem, but it seems like 1 in 10 are going to have a lot of transmission problems, and the other 9 won't have any. I work in oil field transportation, and I know guys that put 600-700K miles on the Cummins without towing, 300-400K when always pulling a gooseneck.

I have always been a hard core Ford guy....when I outgrew the F-150, I had to come to Dodge for a megacab and the CTD. I still love Ford and think the SuperDuty is the best looking truck, but I don't even come close to trusting a 6.0L I don't have that kind of cash laying around or the time to take it to the dealer. It seems to be a crap shoot with the 6.0, you either are ok, or the dealer knows you by name.....I cant take that gamble. all that said, I bought a 06 mega cab 6 spd and wish I would have sooner now. I love the truck, and it will drag a trailer to death, literally! Good Luck!

just my 2 cents, im a mechanic, my dad owned a 99 F-250, 7.3 truck. that my friend was a kick butt truck. good power, superchip woke it up a bit, the E4OD transmission (the auto) was tough as nails, i would HIGHLY reccommend a 7.3 truck, 99-02 were the best, stay away from 6.0 and on, fast....til you put a trailer on em, then their gutless. 18-20 mpg with your foot out of the turbo and 8 ply tires as far as dodges go, I have a 97, i am a big 12 valve fan, good good fuel milage (21-23 WITH my foot int he turbo) pulls dern near anything. all the way up to 05 is a good dodge pickup. they have had prblems witht he auto trannys, but really, if you take care of it with regular maintinence, you'll be good. assuming you dont make 900 ft/lbs of torque. in general, stay the heck away from all new diesels. crap crap crap crap, terrible milage, no power with a trailer, no soot (what gives???) too much unproven tech on them, they;; be eatin the shops up after 100k miles. my .02 |

2007?
I am considering purchasing an 07 megacab 4x4. Any problems or recalls on these trucks? What about fuel mileage, good or bad. It is lifted, probably 4 inches at the most, but I dont know how high. It has 17000 miles on it, they are asking $32000 for it, is that too much or about right?

I say dodge, but then i'm a MOPAR boy haha. Though in all seriousness, Dodge is where the power and reliability is at with the diesel. When i was in school a buddy of mine's father bought a brand new 05 or 06 F350 powerstroke, and it blew up the turbos twice. and it was completely stock. only thing they used it for was to haul a sprint car they raced around to the different tracks. also i've noticed lately that the newer Powerstrokes when they have any kind of performance exhaust on them, sound like a prop plane. idk why just thats how they sound to me. Now with the Cummins on the other hand, that thing with a performance exhaust or just straight piped or stacked, sounds like an old diesel farm tractor. which is how a diesel should sound. tough, powerful, chugging along. On a side note, where i live i always see a newer Dodge Ram 3500 dually hauling a great big long gooseneck car carrier trailer. I've seen it pull 2 full size SRW F350's on it once. see it hauling cars all the time too. it belongs to a dealership around here. Now the only Ford i've seen hauling anything like that was a local farmer pulling a trailer with bails of hay on it. and that doesnt even have a powerstroke, its a CAT diesel. |

The only thing I don't like on my 94' is 2 things: trans/front steering. Both are very flawed but they do work under normal regular conditions. I would love my CTD paired to an Allison 1000 and the front steering like the newer 08's have, then my truck would be great all around.
