Depends a lot on how new of a truck your going to go. Ill start with the 1st gens..
89-93 Cummins- Very basic truck, good long runnin intercooled/turbo engine. Slightly weaker rotary pump than the more heavy duty p pumps. Automatic is a piece of junk. Very very very rough ride.
85??-94 6.9 and 7.3 idi internationals- Also fairly basic interior, although they had some features that were top of the line for a truck that we would consider basic today. Engines actually are fairly reliable with the ocassional lift pump and starter failure. Non intercooled, non turbocharged. Ive owned some of these and basically you get to a point where you fix the worst oil leaks, your happy with the truck, and you just add oil for the rest.

94-98 Cummins- The performance choice for most people. Stock, the engine is fairly timid while it will still pull about anything the average joe wants to. Reliable fueling system (they put them on CAT equipment, referred to as a DENSO). Good fuel mileage.
94-98 Powerstroke- Stock for stock, the powerstroke could take the 12 valve pretty easily in a race. These engines pull strong but the power is gained at a higher rpm. If you pull much, i suggest getting a 4.10 ratio cause your engine wont hardly ever see the power it needs with 3.73s. These trucks had a considerably larger amount of options than the dodges, and not to mention the air conditioner doesnt crap out. You can also get a four door instead of an extended cab.

99-02 cummins- Introduction of the 24 valves, these things run pretty good. Not usually the choice for an engine swap or race project, but it has become more popular every since people started putting p pumps on them. Still an extended cab, but not too cramped. Autos in these engines are still crap, the manuals are ok.
99-03 powerstroke- Last of the 7.3l engine. This engine series was still a 7.3l but received a better injection and lift pump, also a better turbo. Pretty much the last bulletproof engine that made ford look like respectable. I will warn you the stock CD players on these d*mn things dont last long, believe me ive had two go out. Besides that no major complaints... new injectors at 250,000-300,000.

03-07 cummins- The hands down most popular diesel truck in the performance world. Has only recently been rivaled by the duramax, but the ford boys can only hope. Interior is crap, exterior is crap, but i can look past all that. Automatic trans is finally reliable, and the manuals arent that bad either.
03-07 powerstroke- Heres where ford screwed up. With the introduction of the 6.0l they lost all dignity and i have yet to see them get it back. I guess it wasnt entirely their fault, they did it for emissions. Even on a stock engine, there are many electrical and egr problems. If your adding much more than a chip, removing the EGR is a must. High egts can flash-boil the coolant, which leads to head gasket failure. Very nice interior, very pretty truck. Not good for much else.

07+ Cummins- With the addition of the dpf and the introduction of the 6.7l dodge has for the first time become less than bulletproof. The 6 speed trans is awesome, but there have been several reports of them lasting 20k miles before puking out. VVT Turbo leaks, and injector problems. EGR problems. It is to be expected with any engine whenever so much technology has to be introduced so quickly. Very quick truck. Suprisingly enough the interior has improved drastically and so have the options.
07+ powerstroke- Ford introduced the new 6.4l powerstroke. Forgive me for saying this, but it could have slightly less problems than the 6.7l cummins.. if you can look past getting 12mpg highway. Ford has already had experience with the EGR, and VNT Turbo, so they are a little ahead. Weird but good looking interior and very pretty body. Quick, but when i testdrove one it felt a little lacking.

Hope this helps, feel free to correct me on anything just trying to do a very ROUGH side by side comparison.

i just joined the forum, took an hour and a half to read all the posts on this thread, but it applies to me. i come from a ford family, my dad had a ranger, i had a ranger. his truck died got an 07 f150, my ranger (with 234,000 miles) was starting to have problems, so they helped me get a 2000 v8 supercab f150 so i will have something to tow my herbie the love bug to vw shows. but i'm looking for something else, my dad is going to keep the 2000, sell his 2007. even though the f150 averages about 16mpg, he rides his harley (getting 40+mpg) as often as he can.
My friend's dad had an 05 or 06 f350 crewcab dually. he used it for hauling horses. when they got out of horse shows, he sold it and got a f150 crew with the stubby bed.
i like the looks of the fords, and i liked the looks of the 97 dodge, and up until the 04. after that the headlights got kind of funny looking. i need at least a quad cab (supercab equivalent) or the 4 door newer model. I'm not sure if i really need 4 wheel drive (if i did, i'd get manual hubs if they are offered) but i'm mostly looking for fuel economy. i read about some cummins getting 25-27mpg, but also able to tow at least a 20' enclosed car hauler with minimal effort. also i'd want to get a stickshift (most half tons don't even have this option, part of my reason for going to a 3/4 ton. sorry if i just typed too much.

If you can wait till the 09s come out, Dodge will have its new 5.6L diesel in the 1500. At 300hp/525torque, it has the power to tow pretty heavy, limited of course by the suspension of a half-ton truck. Ford has boasted of 9000lbs for its F150 so the Dodge diesel should beat that for sure.

Well as the owner of both an 03 POS and 06 CTD I can say that I have had an issue with my Dodge body. It was something that I even took to the dealer. The passenger side door handle came lose. There you go proof Ford is better than Dodge Never mind the endless trips to the dealer to work on the engine!

Even though the engine isn't made by Ford they made the business decision to put that hunk of crap in there so it's just as bad as if they made it in my book.

I wasn't brand loyal to anyone when I bought my first diesel the 6.0 but I can say that I'll never buy another Ford now tough

Justin

Well i have a 2001 F-350 PSD with the auto. It has a 3 inch lift and spining 35's and i get about 16-18 on the freeway. I absolutely love the way my ferd looks but it is going to go just because Dodge has it beat in almost every category. Go with the Cummins or you will wish you would have.

fords have the styling inside. chevy as the comfy ride. and dodge has the best engine and the big rig looks as well. ive only owned a dodge as im only young but it all started with the last truck my dad bought when i was living at home. We first had the powerstroke. good truck but seemed to be too heavy for field work (working on pivots). He found it to be more of a show truck and didnt want to beat it up so we traded it for a chev. loved the ride on the highway but horrible for off road just cause of the independant front. It couldn't flex enough and we had problems just trying to drive over corn rows with it. Then we got the dodge. Being a kid who always played with model farm stuff i imedeatly fell in love with the looks and sound. Got a bit older and used it to drive to school when he wasnt using it. Beat all my friends racing around. Sure the body doesn't hold up as well as the others but it will last just as long if not better if you take care of it

My 2004 PSD was in the dealer's shop every month (turbos, oil pumps, leaks, etc..). Since I replaced it with a 2007 6.7 3500 in August '07, I have only had to do oil changes. I have never considered myself brand loyal, but ford would have to give me a free truck to get a ford back in my driveway.

The 6.0 was a bad motor which is why Ford went to the 6.4 which is much better.

Welcome to the Mopar community! The Cummins has always been the best diesel, now the trucks are much improved as well.

IF you want a nice ride and dnt want to put power to it i would say a 7.3 powerstroke but if you want power i would go with cummins. I guess the newer 04-08s cummins are nice rides also. GO DODGE. I WISH I HAD

My bil bought a 2002 Crew Cab dually six months ago and he loves the truck. He put a Superchips on it last week and says it's like night and day the way the motor responds now. 7.3 is the best diesel International built for the light/medium duty trucks.
