Question Power Steering Fluid Freezing Point ???

The last few mornings the temps here have ranged from -5 to 5F degrees outside. When I start my truck (outside at work NOT plugged in) there is a horrible groaning sound coming from the PS pump. The truck is alot harder to turn as well.

I'm guessing the PS fluid is thicking up due to the Low Temperatures outside.

I've searched the forums and others have suggested using Valvoline Semi-Synthetic PS fluid with good results.

What is the Freeze Point for Power Steering fluid ??

I deal with -33 here in Montana .I never had my fluid freeze.Yes it does groan on some vehicles because the oil is thick.Switch to a different oil if it bothers you.

I did the turkey baster thing last night and refilled with Valvoline Semi-Synthetic PS.

It's going back into the low single digits in a couple days so we'll see then if it worked or not.

My self I've like the Amsoil ATF as it is full synthetic fluid and it has held up in all of my cars and truck over the past 4 years with out any break down or flow problems down to -24 below zero.

Well, it went down to -2F last night and my truck started right up with NO groans or stiffness from the PS pump!!! :thumbsup

So I'd have to say that's proof enough that it worked ! :thumbsup
