I was just curious if you thought any manufacturers were going to completely drop out of the emissions engine game or not. CAT right now seems to be sitting on the fence, Cummins seems full steam ahed. Mack, Detroit?

You think for good? I heard before the recession that that they wanted to re-enter after they got their act together.

The cat sales man told me it was just the tractor trailer engines the will discontinue, but the medium duty engine they will still make. The big truck engines account for less than 10% of global sales. As far as I have heard the others all all still going.
An amusing fact about Mack and Harley Davidson they are the only vehicle manufactures in the US that make 100% of there products with no out sourcing.

Not totally, after 2010 they will only be offered in navistar trucks, plus cat will be marketing their own over the road trucks. They will be Navistar trucks with Cat engines and transmissions branded Caterpillar and sold/serviced through Cat dealers.
Detroit Diesel is still a Mercedes-owned venture, but they have the biggest market share. We might see Mercedes decide to start another "Dr Z"-style cultural badge war and label ALL of the DD engines MBE engines, but the same plants and people will probably be around. I don't see Detroit going away, although I could see Mercedes spinning them off.
I can't see Cummins going anywhere. Engines is all they do, so it'd be a major hit to their company if they were to leave the OTR business.
Mack is a subsidy of Volvo and I was under the impression that their engines were already cousins to Mercedes Benz engines. Wasn't there some technology sharing between those two? Or did they both come to EUP's coincidentally? Mack does seem proud of having Mack-badged engines.
Does Volvo make their own engines?
Have you seen anything to substantiate that Cat is going to start badging their own trucks? That does seem to be how Cat operates, but if they can't pass emissions and don't want the market share now, then it seems odd that they are going to all of a sudden pass emissions and go after the market share.
I could see International ditching Navistar and start outsourcing all of their engines. I don't know who they're going to steal their ideas from without Caterpillar producing OTR engines.
I will predict that Bosch will be producing injection systems for every OTR engine company in 2013.

Yeah, Volvo seems to be doin pretty well with their motors, the VN's are real nice trucks, other than all the rediculous electronics, I went out on a road call a while back, had a warning light come on his LCD display for a taillight out.
Mercedes is doin all right, too.
I like the PACCAR motors, and they don't seem to have any probs with DPF's or anything....PACCAR's making a class 8 engine? I've seen em in some KW box trucks, same trucks that have the smaller Cummins (ISC?)
Another good mid-sized diesel is the Isuzu, puttin em in a lot of 6500-7500 Chevy's, and I think Hino may be running em too.

This is what I have been told by people from Cat, it may change. Cat is in the process of doing tier IV mock ups as we speak.
