So I know this question has been beaten to death but I am still confused and would appreciate any help.

I bought my truck in the fall of last year and I am trying to figure out if it is an 04 or an 04.5.

Based upon the date on the driver door sticker, the truck was built on 10-03, and the eighth digit of the VIN number is a "C" which, if my understanding is correct, would make the truck an 04.

However, when I look at the sticker on the side of the valve cover is has date of manufacture as 1-22-04 and it says Advertised HP is 325 @ 2900 which would make it an 04.5.

I dont know if the truck ever had a cat because when I bought it, it already had an aftermarket turbo back exhaust.

Can anyone help me with this? Thank you in advance for any insight.

hey everyone about a month ago I got a new lift pump ( airdog) to make sure my vp44 was getting enough fuel. but 2 weeks after the install my truck wouldnt start after work. my lift pump is working fine.

so I figured my vp44 had finally died, my mechanic buddy tested the vp plug and said it was getting power and ground. soooo I bought a reman vp44 ( 1800) and put the new seals on the vaccuum and power steering pump. also did the camshaft sensor too.

truck still wont start. and when I try to bleed it the fuel doesnt seem to be high pressure, it only seems like the lift pump is pushing it through the vp44 ??

if I crack the line and crank it over it gushes out fuel with no where near enough pressure.

is there a way to test the ecm? I'd hate to pay 600$ for one and it not be the problem. because Im now broke! also how likely is it that my remanned vp isnt working right?

any help would be greatly appreciated guys

Just did my first trip with my new '12 mega dually longhorn automatic. 700 miles round trip. On the way home yesterday the cruise control turned off suddenly and then wouldn't come back on. No symbol on the dash. I pulled over and turned the truck off and then drove some more and it still wouldn't come on. It wasn't till I stopped for lunch and the truck was off for about a half hour that it worked again. Went out one more time through out the day and after I stopped for about twenty minutes it worked again. Any ideas? I was mostly cruising at around 60 and my toy hauler weighs about 16k. The dealer is over an hour away so I'd like to avoid a trip if possible. The truck now has just over 1k miles on it. Other than that the first trip was great and I love the truck. With the 4.10 gears and max tow pkg it made the haul a breeze.

Always kind of noticed my truck has been a little sluggish since I bought it and it recently has become much worse. Even with my smarty cranked to 9 this thing is a dog anymore, it has never even really produced smoke unlike my buddies trucks with the same setup. I really noticed this weekend it had trouble pulling a tiny 12ft flatbed trailer with one quad. Egts are hitting 900 easily post turbo, on a hard pulling can make 45psi but it seems to fade off, cruising around at 70mph I'm pulling around 5 psi. My cp3 is making 6-7k psi at idle, 14-17k psi normal and 21k wot. All mods are listed in sig. I have tried every smarty combo so it's not that. Pretty sure have a boost leak but my cp3 seems under fueled.

These are Cummins-spec shims, not the super thin and varying-diameter shims sold on eBay. They have an OD of 8.5 mm and an ID of 3.0 mm, and start at 0.80 mm in thickness and go through 2.0 mm in increments of 0.05 mm, exactly like the shims that come out of our injectors from the factory!

The distributor normally has these available in sets of 500+ shims for diesel service and injector shops but after I explained that most of us are only trying to set up our personal injectors, they agreed to assemble a kit for enthusiasts like us. I told him there would probably be several interested people based on the number of posts and threads here on CumminsForum and other diesel-enthusiast sites. The kit they've come up with includes 125 shims; 25 sizes in 0.05 mm steps from 0.80 mm to 2.00 mm thickness, 5 of each size for $100.00 plus approx. $10.00 shipping depending on your shipping address.

I bought a kit to adjust my RV275s and there were plenty of each size shim to make adjusting my pop pressures a cinch! For those of you who've never done this, you'll need to buy or borrow an injector pressure tester and the proper adapter for your injectors. You may find it easier (and cheaper) to send your injectors to a reputable shop. There are several that support this site and have great reputations. If you go that route, be sure to search thoroughly before picking one. As for me, I really enjoy tinkering with my Cummins and knowing what's going on inside!

If you're interested in getting shims to adjust your own injectors, contact John Jeffriess at Sun Diesel Systems. His email is john@sundieselsystems.com. They have manufacturing facilities and offices in Australia and here in the US. They also manufacture and distribute injector components, including most sizes of shims for other injectors (like 12V and CR injectors), nozzles, injector pump parts, etc.

One last thing, if you get one of these kits, you may want to get yourself a case to organize the shims. The shims come divided by size in ziplock bags. I just got a cool plastic case with lots of small compartments at Walmart. Hope this helps!
