New '03 owner
Hello again. Wouldn't expect you to remember but I had you guys build me a transmission for my '92 last year. I had the red/white extended cab 4x4. Anyway, I come seeking advice. I have purchased an '03. My intent, as with the last truck, is to have a reliable tow rig for our 10K lb fifth wheel. This truck has the 47RE trans. I'd like to be able to increase the power a bit with a SMARTY Jr or similar to something comparable to a HO engine. Is there anything that can be done to the trans, short of a complete rebuilt or upgrade to a 48RE, to be able to do this? Also, do you recommend towing our 5th wheel in OD with this transmission as is? I get differing opinions on whether I can do this on level ground or not or if I can keep it in OD going up hills, etc. Thanks Wade

Keep the power moderate if you dont want to modify the tranny right away. As long as the tranny pan is clean when you service it if you wanted to do a partial TC and VB type upgrade you can do so within your 47 RE system. You can add a 48 RE VB to it as well if you wish that is definately option. As for towing , just keep the rpms high if you are wanting to tow in od around the 1700 rpm range.
