FASS noise reduction question

Hey Dan, I am not certain of whether this is the correct place to get in touch with you but I'll give it a shot. I sent my FASS in today for the noise reduction via UPS (should arrive Wednesday). The pump is extremely loud to the point that I can hear it over the radio running down the road. I included the specified information in the box, but just in case I wanted to give you the info:

FASS 95 series
Serial number: 5864
Model number: 00100

The FASS came with my truck when I bought it a few months ago. It is still eligible for the noise reduction correct? I included the return shipping address, which is my girlfriend's address, on the same sheet of paper. Please let me know if there is anything else you will need and thanks so much.

Charlie

UM...as long as you have good shipping info and RMA: 2008-10,000 on the outside of the box....we should be good...

That SN is not correct....looks to be a Motor Serial Number if its a 95 Series.....I show your Unit Serial number is 1988 if its a 95 Series....

I wrote 2007 - 10,000 on the outside of the box. I didn't know what that meant so I just copied it straight from the posted instructions. Sorry if this causes any problems.

Dan, my pump came in the mail last week and I installed it today. It looked like a new pump, is this the case? It seems to be just as loud as it was before I sent it to you. I was hoping that it was a new pump and this is the "break in period" after which maybe it would quiet down. If it's not a new pump, the improvements didn't seem to help. I had read something about using rubber or some kind of barrier between the pump bracket and the place on the body where it mounts to possibly reduce noise. Is there any validity to this? Thanks again for any help.

Charlie, did you do the "5-Gallon Bucket" test?

Most updated pumps are much quieter than older ones, they still make noise and the HPFP's being mounted to the bed can make noise that magnifies by the sheetmetal of the bed itself. Mounting it with a insulator of some sort does help with the HPFP's.

Reason I asked about the bucket test, if your pump is having a hard time drawing the fuel they groan louder, since you saw no obvious benefit from the update it makes me wonder if you have an additional issue like a blockage or restriction in tank or feed line.

If you have time, do the bucket test... if the HPFP is alot quieter when drawing out of the bucket and back into the bucket the issue causing the noise is most likely upstream.

I have done the bucket test on a friend's FASS but not on my own. I suppose that could be an issue although I have roughly 17 pounds of fuel pressure. But the pump may still be producing good pressure just with added strain. I have a small in-line fuel filter prior to the FASS, but I replaced it not too long ago. I'll have to try the 5 gallon bucket test and if restriction seems to be the issue I'll start with bypassing that filter and then move to dropping the tank to check the drawstaw and feed hose. Thanks for the advice.

Your welcome Charlie, as mentioned I have seen a few FASS Pumps and Systems in my day.... IT's normally the some of the same issues just in different trucks.

Good Luck and keep us posted.

Yeah...when your pump was here...we found the motor to be making more noise than i like. Had a worn bearing. We elected to change the motor out under wnty and update the motor base. It should have been alot quieter than when it came in, that this was VERY noisy. I know my guys are very picky when it comes to noise....they know my standards.

Have you checked to make sure that the pump is not touching any sheet metal on the truck? (Is this an HPFP or FASS? I cant recal off hand.)

It's an HPFP and I was going to check into the sheet metal situation this upcoming weekend. Because of where the holes were drilled for the bracket, the end of the pump is barely touching a portion of the bed. I was going to try some sort of insulator.

Also having driven for a couple of days now with the new pump I wanted to ask you about my pressure. I seem to be having less pressure than before. My gauge only reads to 15 pounds. Before I was always tached out above 15 and while running down the highway or accelerating it didn't drop below 15. Now at idle I am sitting squarely on 15 pounds and while running 65-70 or accelerating she drops to 11 pounds. Is this normal?

The new ware plate update has a recessed place for the spring to center it so it was normal to see slightly lower pressure due to less tension on the spring.

The verdict is in. I worked on the pump last night. First I placed a piece of rubber between the pump and where it was touching the sheet metal. This seemed to help a little but not much. I proceeded with the 5 gallon bucket test in attempt to detect blockage between the tank and pump. The pump was just as loud when isolated. I had lost hope but then it dawned on me to do the bucket test with the pump dismounted from the bracket. This made a noticeable reduction in noise. I took a can of rubberized undercoating and sprayed the inside of the bracket and the bed sheet metal where the pump was touching and where the bracket mounts. I also placed strips of rubber around the pump and between the pump and the sheet metal. Lastly I placed rubber boots on the mounting bolts. After all of this, it seems to be noticeably quieter although still louder than FASS pumps owned by friends, but more tolerable.
