fass has no fuel

Hey everyone I just installed a Fass 150/95 last night. Install was a little tricky as I have camper tie downs and had to attach the pumpt to the frame horizontally instead of vertically. I don't know if this is ok or not. I ran the fuel line into my stock fuel filter as I have my fuel pressure gauge reading from there. My question is I can't get my truck to start. I bumped it a few times and it started for about a minute and then died. I think it was just left over fuel in the system. I then tried to bump or prime the system again and nothing I tried this a few more times and still nothing. I can hear the fass pump running but it never stops justs keeps on running. I pulled the filter off the fass and it has no diesel pulled thru it at all still smells and looks brand new. Also should I remove the stock fuel filter out of the stock fuel filter housing? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am stuck at home with no mode of transportation.

Hey Nate, I'll try to help where I can.

First off, I don't know if it's Ok to mount the FASS horizontally or not. My intial thought would be NO. The only reason I don't think so is because the FASS sends a large portion of the fuel it picks up right back to the fuel tank ( Fuel Air Seperator System .... FASS ). It sends the fuel from a return fitting that I THINK if it pointing towards the ground will naturally just let the fuel drain from the filter due to gravity. ( think of laying a soda bottle on it's side with the cap off ). If it was pointing towards the bed of the truck, I guess it would probably work, but again, I don't know for sure.

Another thing that is I believe left out of FASS's directions and I kinda think is important is the pre-filling ( priming ) of the filters with diesel fuel prior to screwing them on. You said that when you unscrewed your filters they were bone dry ... I'm assuming that you never primed them. Also, priming and servicing the filters is going to be VERY difficult with them being mounted sideways. I don't think your water seperator is going to work at all mounted that way. Honestly ... I'd rather see you mount it the way it should be mounted, even if you have to relocate it to a totally different place.

You mentioned that you continued to use your stock fuel filter housing because of your fuel pressure gauge. That's fine, I too did the same thing, however I did it to retain the usage of both the WIF sensor and the fuel heater. I DID however modify the filter because I didn't want to put any restrictions on the flow of fuel at all. You can't just remove the filter though, because the filter has the o-ring / gasket at the top that seals the top and the bottom of the canister. Therefore I cut up / modified the old filter so that I could continue to use the gasket, however loose the restrictions that the filter puts on the fuel. Here's how I did it ...

The canister then got primed ( prefilled with diesel ) and then re-mounted back where it was. ZERO restrictions at all !!

Once you have it all done ( and done right ) you SHOULD be able to easily get your truck running again by simply cracking the intake line goint to your VP-44. Crack it and bump your starter a couple of times until you see fuel comming out of the fitting. Re-tighten it up, and fire up your truck. Everything shoud be fine then.

Hope this helps !! If not ... ask away. I'm REALLY happy with my FASS, and whatever I can do to help out feel free to ask.

Install the FASS with the filters pointed in the downward direction. It will not work any other way. NOTE -- This is a FASS:

This is an HPFP:

Which do you have? By your sig, i would assume the FASS 95/150-1007

How does that work again Dan ... is the FIRST number the filter size or the second? I get confused all the time.

Which one of these is the 95gph FASS the 150/95 or the 95/150

FASS aaa/bbb-cccc@xxPSI

HPFP bbb-cccc@xxPSI

OK....here is the best way i can explane it:

A = Series Number....FASS systmes only. 150 Series is 25% larger than the 95 Series. Info here....

B = GPH. This will tell you the flow rate of the pump. (NOTE: if there is any referance to PSI (x) in the part number, this is the flow rate at said pressure)

C = Model the unit is built for. 1000's = Dodge. 2000's = Ford. 3000 = Chev. AND they are broken up into sub categories within each Vech make.

x = Pressure. If the unit is built for higher than normal pressure output....its listed here. If not, assume stock pressures.

Sooooo if i were to say that I had a FASS 150/95 that would mean that I had a FASS with the larger filters, and the 95gph pump right?

If I were to say that I had a FASS 95/95 that would mean that I had the FASS with the smaller filters and a 95gph pump right?

If I were to say that I had a FASS 150/150 I would have a FASS with full sized filters and a 150gph pump right?

Just making sure I've got it right ... LOL

thanks

Hey guys thanks for the replies. I just went ahead and pivoted the filters into a vertical position instead of horizontal. They stick out about 2 to 3 inches from the bottom of the bed of my truck but still are about 3 feet off the ground so hopefully they'll be ok. Filled the canisters with diesel and whaddya know truck fired right up. I left the stock fuel filter in the holding canister and my pressure is reading around 14 or a little over so I don't think there is really any restrictions using the stock fue filter as I believe this is a good fuel pressure.
