A similar mishap happened to me once in my dads restored 65 chevy pickup. I was driving it and I slammed on the brakes for some reason and a can of metallic blue paint was hit by the tool box (its a plastic cheap one and hasnt ever been bolted down) and it exploded sending nice bright blue paint everywhere on the back of the cab. I used paint thinner and the stuff came right off with some good rubbing. It didnt harm the paint at all, and it's just regular automotive paint...no clearcoat or any protective coating.

"Easy-off oven cleaner" will take highway paint off vehicles.
