Polishing cast aluminum
Anyone know the process, and what type of materials to use to polish cast aluminum. THe portions that I want to polish, have already been machined, so no pitting, just need to know how to bring on a shiny luster-thanks

I polish a lot of aluminum. 1. Sand the part to a minimum of 500 grit; 1000 grit would be easier. The finer the sand paper, the easier it is to polish. 2. Tripoli buffing compound. 3. Spiral sewn buffing wheel. 4. Motor of some sort to run buffing wheel. I have 3/4 hp Baldor buffer that will rip your arm off and beat you with it if you don't respect the machine . However, I started with a 6 inch wheel on a bench grinder. It will work, just not as powerful and takes longer.5. Safety equipment: gloves, dust mask, face shield. 6. Load the wheel with the compound by applying the compound while the wheel is turning. 7. Apply the part to the wheel and begin working it back and forth slowly. 8. Heat is the trick with aluminum. Basically, you are melting the top surface smooth at a micro level. 9. Keep working the part from one point to the end. Done correctly, it will look very much like chrome. |
