Hard water or salty water?

We live on small acreage with a well. Water is very hard, 38 grains. We therefore have a large softener for domestic water. If I leave water in the sink, salt will be visibly left behind. So....

Do I wash my truck with the hard well water or softened but very salty water? I want to put some frostproof sillcocks in the garage. I was thinking both hot and cold, with a tempering valve to keep the hot at 100F, the limit of my pressure washer. I think soft but salty water is still better as soft water cleans better, and uses less soap. Anybody else face this problem?

To get the water spots off you can put some viniger in the water and then rince the truck with it then throw some wax on it .

38 grains is not very hard water, it is hard water not very hard water. you have a problem with your softner. the backflush time needs to be longer to get all the brine water out.

Backwash just fluffs up the resin bed! fast rinse longer or untill the conductivity comes down

So you guys are saying it's not normal to have salt stains with 38 grains of hardness? Our softener is a 70,000 grain unit, installed by a softener contractor based on a well water analysis. It's has volume based regeneration, at 1200 gals. Our clothes and dishes clean well, and the water feels soft with showering. My information says anything over 10.5 grains is considered very hard.

How do I check to see if the softened water is what it should be? Do I send another water analysis of the softened water?

Jay,

I too run a Iron and salt softner unit and if you cansee salt sedimate in your water, I wouldn't wash my truck in it.

I would get it fixed right away, because something isn't right.

as for the hard water, the vinager thing will work like the other Gent said. or you could put that Mr. Clean nossle soap and filter water thing on and rinse with that, its not the fastest rinse but it works, I use the fast rinse to get the soap off, (which is letting the hard water onto the truck) then go back over with the filterd rinse it works fine, I tested it one day by running hard water on the drivers window and then the filterd water on the back door window and what a difference, hard spots all over the drivers window and non on the back door window.
and this little test was done in the sun on a 90 degree day in FL.

Thanks for the info. I've learned so much about so many things since coming here. I'll definitely get my softener checked. I like the Mr Clean idea for the rinse. Thanks everybody
