Best Detailing Buffer??

I am interested in getting a detailing buffer for my truck. I have been looking at the Ultimate Detailing Machine, and the Porter Cable 7424. What do you guys think, and if you have another one, and recommend it, let me know!!

flex 3401

Hello, Check the flex 3401. It is a random orbital and the reviews on the finishing forums are great. Got one but have not had a chance to use it with my 3m perfect it products. Steve.

maybe i'm just ignorant and old school believing elbow grease is the best way... don't you run a real high risk of swirling the heck out of your paint if you use a buffer wrong? Not to hijack your thread, but is a buffer really that beneficial, and is it safe to use? (bc it is a big job to do by hand)

I use a Porter Cable. I have had it over 3 years no problems. It is a quality tool from a known quality tool manufacturer. The UDM or Flex may be fine. I have heard the UDM has more power than the PC I do not know if this is true. I have never needed more power. If I needed more power I would get a rotary. (I want a rotary. I need to find a guinea pig that will let me trash there car. To mess up a paint job with a DA polisher would require someone to do something really assinine. A polisher can work wonders.

Thanks for the responses guys. I want to stay away from the Rotary's, and the others that can potentially harm my paint. I want to keep that safety factor when using the DA polisher. Any more suggestions....Keep em coming guys!!

I use a black and decker rotary for doing show paint. A buffer wouldn't do what I want it to do. You are right about a rotary though, if you don't know what you are doing it can get away from you real fast and burn the paint. Here is a wetsanded and polished finish I am doing on my duster right now.

For someone who has never touched a buffer before, stay away from a rotary. In most cases, very similar, if not identical results can be achieved with a DA (PC, Flex, UDM), it just takes a little longer. The main difference between a rotary and a D/A is the the amount of heat caused by friction which breaks down the polishes. The rotary will create more friction, thus creating more heat, thus breaking down the polish faster, which is why you can in most case cut your polishing time by about 1/4th with a rotary.

A great DA for anyone, weather a novice or expert is a UDM, they wont break the bank and they are very durable and easy to use.

Thanks for the input dedicatedtrans06, that is exactly what I am in the market for. Something that will get the job done, but not hurt my paint. I have used them before, but never used a Rotary, and know I am not capable of safely using one!!

No problem, a DA polisher is great for someone who doesnt want to risk damaging paint, its near impossible hurt anything. I was looking on AutoGeek.net for you which is where I buy 90% of my detailing supplies (great people to deal with and lightning fast shipping) and I found a starter kit which comes with a few different varieties of pads, a carrying bag, some polishing cloths and pad cleaner and conditioner, but they are on back order, which isnt a surprise because its a hell of a deal at just $169. The only other thing you'd have to buy would be the polishes, for which I would recommend Menzerna Polishes, a tried and true product. Here is a link to the polisher: Ultimate Detailing Machine Intro Kit with FREE BONUS!

Have fun buddy!
