Cleaning Undercarriage...

Whats the best way?? I want it spotless. I have seen some trucks in the photo galleries that look like they just rolled off the line and its got me wanting to really clean up under there. I have heard of purple power, is this good? Also, is it OK to paint the undercarriage black? If so, what is a durable paint to use?

I just hit it with the pressure washer, and then I painted the frame and suspension with black rustoleum. did that about a year ago and its still holding up. My frame had very very little rust to begin with however.

and to keep clean I just soak with degreaser and pressure wash.

If you want to repaint the whole thing and if you have an air compressor, a gallon of rustoleum thinned out, and a paint will cover everything nicely and be cheaper than spraypaint in the long run. thats my next project.

Clean off the undercarriage with a pressure washer and the hit it with some black rust-oleum. This is a pretty cheap way to go about it. I did mine last spring and am getting ready to do it again this spring after the hard winter here in Indiana.

I use undercoat paint from a autozone its like a rhino spray in a can i did my wheel wells with this and bottoms of doors on the inside when my frame and axles get to be dirty looking i will clean it much as i can then spray this stuff all over . But its 6 bucks a can for the reall good stuff and i bought the cheap $1 can for my wheel wells but it holds up good just comes out like tar and brown but dries fully black the 6$ can is black its a rubber spray and its used for deadening sound as well its a bit spendy but worth it to be a rubberized spray that you wont have to redo every year had it on my ranger and jeep when i lived on a 12.5 mile dirt road one way so 25 miles a day for 2years i had the jeep then ranger for 2 years held up awesome

Rustoleum satin black is closer to the factory sheen than flat black but either works.

I clean and remove any remotely flaky rust, rust convert, use a Rustoleum rusty metal primer and then satin black. Spray cans are convenient, but tend to waste a lot of paint in the air but I've used them with success (as a test, repainted one of my frames, put outside for 6 months, still looked brand new).

One thing you don't want to do, is spray the undercoating on anything that has any corrosion... it will spread underneath the undercoat until one day a chunk of undercoat falls off with a chunk of your sheetmetal attached to it...
