Hey guys building a 1/8 mile drag truck. 81 short wide chevy, still looking for a 94-98 12v. Truck is now 90% done waiting on engine. Tranny is being built, [glide], just recieved the destroked stuff and the JW Ultra Bell. Question is: the UB is so thick that it limits you to a 10.5" or smaller convertor. Little scared of stall speed with the crazy torque from the ol cummins. What would be the loosest conv. yall think would work well in this setup. The pump will be set up w/ a 4k gsk. I know the cummins comes on hard down low and if its got to much conv. in it im nervous ill be out of rpm pretty quick. Ive dec. to go glide to help keep the engine loaded well and hopfully not have all the traction issues i have in my other truck. I did tub it and went with 33-15-15 hossiers. Any convertor opinions or advise???:thumbsup

powerglide are some tuff trannies, I don't know about the torque converter but if you can get the rpms up, that's what most hardcore gasser drag racers run...

Yes I know thats a trans most run in the super gas and super comp classes. 2500 - 3000 lb car or what ever.

Impala's aren't no 3000, that's what we ran... but we also had a high winder engine, step dad said you'd need to have a custom built torque converter (he drag raced for 30 years, 68 Camaro) I go to him when my Camaro is acting up too...
but he said if your having it built up the way you say it should handle the massive torque from the built cummins, you need to sit down with a paper and a computer and figure up your shift point, your RPMs your rearend and the gears in the trans (this is what's gonna make or break your performance)
the more torque you have the higher the stall, so I'd agree with going to a shop and having one built (also ask around the big block guys, they make massive torque as well)

Rather you know or not, all the fastest cummins powered dragsters and the couple funny cars out there run a ol glide. My tranny builder says he can build it to hold the torque. Remeber my goal is not as great as those guys, i just want a decant fast bracket truck to play with and have fun on the weekends. Hopefully will run high 6's in the 1/8, may not though not sure, have no idea what its going to weigh. Got it so it will turn 4k+ put a 3.50 gear in it and 33/15's. Should be almost soft off the line with no brake as compaired to my current drag car, due to the gearing and large single turbo, and then way on down the track just 1 shift. Glad ctd8999 i could give you a laugh. I see your 7.46 1/8 not to shabby, what your rig weigh?? I may be way wrong but i am hoping for around 4000 lbs or so, weight makes all the diff. in racing.

If your not going to go balls to the wall all out race vehicle, why go thru the trouble and expence for a PG. My truck is a 99 QC/SB, I really can't tell you how much it weighs 6900 - 7100 ?? Good Luck with your project. Thanks Steve B.

Expense? Heck its lots cheaper than the autos you guys have built that come in the late modle dodges, 47-48re i believe guys spend 3 to 6 thousand to upgrade everthing and build them super strong. Heck im building this glide prob. for what guys spend on a super great triple disk convertor. Ill have less than a grand in it more like 800 and thats turbo shafts and all the goodies inside. Where you get the expense on the glide is when you start going with other than factory gearing and have to buy the more expensive planets. But im thinking the 1.81 should work well for me. Well see, hope to ay least make the power in your sig. but be over a ton lighter. Ya id much rather pay the ticket on this glide as the one you payed on your goerend and converter but not saying mine will hold up any better but will see. That 7.46 is still pretty impressive. Later

Well you obviously know nothing about PG, and bigblocks can put out diesel torque especially when theyre running twin turbos on juice, please do some research before posting and read the tread its not going in a dodge its going in a lighter chevy
