Exclamation Best BOMBs for Racing

With so many BOMBs out there that each have different effects on HP and torque, I have been thinking a lot about what mods really help the most in the ¼ mile. You would think a big torque adder wouldn’t help in the ¼ mile as much as a big HP adder since all of your time is spent in the upper RPMs. Verses sled pulling where lots of low end torque can make or break your day if you can’t get the sled up to speed fast enough and towards the end of the pull where RPMs start to come down. I know you hard core racers spent the winter stocking up on mods for the new year!

Tell us where you were in the ¼ last summer, what you did over the winter, and where you hope that puts you this summer, even if it was as small as changing to a different box or program. When you get a chance to run, come back and tell us what you actually did. Should be a good BOMB comparison.

My best run last summer was 12.91 at 105mph. This winter I put on an aftermarket intercooler, bigger intake, bigger twins, bigger water/meth jets, hot injection pump, hotter box program (upgrade), some fuel delivery mods, and smaller tires (for racing only). My goal is to get into 12 seconds on #2 only which shouldn’t be a problem. Ultimately, I would like to see 12.5 or better with the water/meth on. First race day is May 14th. I'm begging for good weather!

I have not been on the strip since '03 when I ran an 1/8th mile in 9.21 with a Drag Comp, DD3s, Intake and Exhaust. I will run the 1/4 with M4.5s, HRVP, and a B1 this year.

Ouch. That's warm. Should probably move those twins to the top of the list!

Performance tip

Ok,... here's a tip I heard recently that I'd like some validation of thought from some members. Many of us run the Snow water/meth. This tip is to put nozzles between the turbos in the cold pipe. This would be just for racing ONLY as it would be tooooo corrosive to run like that all the time. I was told that the results are significantly MORE than running your nozzles in the Arc Flow or similar setup. If a guy were going to the strip maybe you could have the Arc flow just capped off and then switch them over following a night of racing and vice versa as needed. Thoughts??

I've only seen one person actually try it. Our own "got...DIESEL?". Prepare yourself to drool and check this out: *Pre-turbo water meth? - A

There are pros and cons for both locations I guess, but I believe I'll stick with my intake horn injection. For what I do, it is used only as an extra fuel (heavy on the meth) as EGT reduction is not needed yet. I guess with that in mind, injection as close to the combustion chamber as possible would be best for me. I only got 12 seconds to get in as much as possible and that should minimize loss due to sticking to surface area on its journey through the intake system/intercooler and evaporation from high turbo discharge temps (hot stuff) on that side of the intercooler.

Yeah, the interstage water/meth was very potent, and injecting it pre-secondary keeps the intercooler out of the condensation arena. I ran literally gallons through the secondary on a normal basis. I worked very hard at nozzle placement and angle in order to keep the spray pattern tight to the center of the wheel. It has it's drawbacks.....iver the last couple thousand miles I have noticed the very tips of the wheel starting to lose their sharp corner, and I can't tell what kind of erosion has taken place. I think as long as it is only run on the quarter, those short durations would have very little adverse effects on the compresor over the long haul. The results are pretty cool, and I only wish I could get my butt up to Anchorage to run with AKRAM and the boys to try her out.

My addition to the thread....stage intercooling is the way to go. Whether it be chemical or mechanical, DO IT. There is so much efficiciency loss in the secondary due to inlet temps it not even funny. I'm working on a water/air cooler, and I may resort to another air to air, depends on the logistics of both and availablilty of parts. Remember, I still do everything by rubbing pennies together when I can, I like tinkering and inventing. I have a MACK charge air cooler that I might cut in half and shorten to fit in the Sport bumper I have. It's wide enough to allow the piping to come in through the fender floors right behind the core support. A little Bumper cover modification to let it breathe nice and give it a cool look. The water cooler I have is off of a marine 370 Cummins, and it's very do-able as well, I just don't know which would be more efficient with out sub 65* air here....I'm leaning towards the air to air, but haven't decided yet. So before you add more turbos to that twin set-up, try an intercooler first and hold on to your pants, interstage charge air cooling is the best kept secret no-one seems to be talking about!!

Well; I like drag racing .. Dont have anything special yet, but its fun to run, and I have made a couple additions that help quite a bit, so ill contribute the knowledge I have about what helped my truck out.

-First ever runs at scheid a few years back got me an 11.6 at 62mph through the 1/8th with ONLY a fuel plate/drop in K&N, and straight pipe. Stock tranny, etc.
-Then I went to the 1/8th mile in Jamestown(KY) after I got my transgo shift kit, and lockup switch. The best I got there was a 10.769. Quite a bit better since the lockup switch is basically what was making the difference.
-Then I upgraded to a 3k GSK, 16cm housing, 4 inch exhaust and cone K&N filter, and went from 265's to 285's. Went to the 1/4, and turned a 10.27 at 66.4mph, and 16.23 at 81mph. The 3k is what made the difference there IMO. Everything else helped very little if any.
-Got the triple disc Goerend installed a few weeks ago, timed at 16*, and went back to jamestown to the 1/8th. Best was a 10.12 at 67.4mph. 60ft is 2.1 leaving at 8-10psi in 4x4. Running with converter locked as soon as it hits 2nd.
The converter didnt make a lot of difference in times, because my stock converter actually did pretty good with the lockup switch. Without it, it wouldnt put much to the ground though. I can still run decent with this converter unlocked, but I still do better with it locked, so that is how I run. I feel like I could now run 16.1's through the 1/4, but Mainly what hurts me is not launching with over 8-10psi. I have stock shafts, so that is all I will launch with. I could probably get into the 15's, but I would have to build 20psi or so, and id be afraid to do that. Future plans are 215 injectors out of a 215 pumped 5 speed, and maybe some 191 DV's a little later. I dont want to run too hot on a stock turbo or blow a head gasket, and I really dont want to kill my tranny too early; so I dont want to go too crazy. Any guesses what I could run with the 215's, and 191's? I would like to run low 15's, but I dont know. I feel like mid 15's wouldnt be a problem. Id really like to throw some 370's, and 191's at it, but like i said. I dont want to run too hot, blow my head gasket, or kill my tranny. :fist: Plus i use this thing hauling quite a bit in the summer, and need it to stay fairly cool. Ill let you guys know if the 215's help out any when I get them in. And I should have video of me running real soon up. Just waiting on my buddy to get the cord for his digital camera. Ill post the link here when i get them up..

Eric
