I know this subject is beat to death, I just did a search and saw plenty of threads. But nothing quite like my scenario. I have possibly got an up and coming grudge race. It's with my buddy, so it's just for sh1ts-n-giggles. But I still want to win, he keeps talking up his truck like it's the only thing to tow with (at 10.5 mpg around town driving like granny, I don't think so, I can do 20 mpg driving like he does). It's supposed to take place at the local 1/4 mile drag strip. He has a 1999 Chevy Crew Cab Long Bed 2WD Auto, with a 454 ... totally stock. Well sort of, he does have these chinsy little dual pipes that look like coffee stir sticks sticking straight out the back (they're so small they're laughable). ![]() My truck, see sig, I'm running a Quadzilla XZT, RV275's, no muffler, no resonator, no silencer ring (never had a cat) so it's an absolute straight pipe, and boosting about 27 - 28 psi. I am still on the stock clutch, and plan on staying on it. ![]() Anywho, I want to beat the guy, but I'd rather loose than break something. I just want advice how I can get as quick a launch as possible, without taking too much risk of breaking something. I'm thinking to just launch in 2nd, 4WHI, and see if I can hold the rpms at about 1,500 rpm, and slip the clutch just barely in order to get immediate response when I let off the brakes. And then slip the clutch only enough to keep it from falling on its face. If he beats me, he beats me. I think I'm putting maybe 320 - 330 hp & maybe 775 - 800 lb ft of torque down compared to what other guys have dyno'd with similar mods. At that, I think I'll beat him, but it may be close. I'm going to loose the spare tire & tailgate (at least) before I go to the track. All fluids & filters will be fresh. I've got a full tank now, I doubt I'll burn too much fuel before then. Any advice how to launch without breaking anything, would be appreciated. but rowing through 4 gears, he may have a chance (what do you think?).- JyRO

yould get him. between foirst and second there is a small gear split that if you shift it just right you dont lose that boost build up which kills most 6 speeds. practice it at stop lights. I wouldnt do a boosted launch on a stock clutch with the quadzilla. youd be better off to run it up to 1500 rpms and slip the clucth when taking off to build boost. oncve. your turbo lights..youl leave him in the dust. I just dynoed at 355/744 with just a comp box, 5" straight pipe and Air intake and i hold my own on the streets.

This has been my experience, then again I don't have a stock clutch, and I'm no guru, but... Put her in 4HI, 2nd gear. I'd say around 1600-1800rpm. If your stock clutch isn't slipping now, then you should be ok at that rpm range. I def would not try a boosted launch with the stock clutch. Let your clutch out just slightly quicker than your used to start and finesse your shifts down the track. I kinda think it's better on parts this way. It's just all in the timing. My first 3 times I launched in 4WD I left at 1800rpm. All 3 of those times netted me an average of 16.9 second runs. The 4th time I launched I took it to 2200rpm and got a 15.8 second run. Then I quit for the night. My next time out there I'm gonna go for a 2500rpm launch and see what that gets me. Mind you all my launches are not boosted launches either. I haven't gotten good enough to master that one yet. You should get him though. Once your turbo lights you watch him fade from your peripherals.

Just an FYI, with your setup, you would dyno closer to 270 hp. I used to have that setup. Trying to help out. Josh

Well, thanks for the info. The 235 hp is at the engine I would imagine. So 270 at the tires I guess is feasible. My numbers are an estimate based on real dyno runs others have done with the same or similar mods. But I really don't care about big numbers. I just want my truck to run well, for a long time. - JyRO |

Without my drag comp I only dyno'd at 279hp and 711tq. But I also had a strange limp mode defuel going too. After my 6 speed swap I still had the auto pcm in it, and it seemed like it was doing something weird with the fueling, it'd only fuel to 2400rpm and then drop off completely. Changed the pcm to a manual and instantly noticed no more drop while driving. Haven't dyno'd since... waiting for a turbo/studs/springs.
