I had used straps for years but got tired of blowing 80 bucks everytime one broke... All I use now is chain... Haven't had any issues and we go wheeling every weekend...

i'm the person that everybody calls when they're stuck around here, i've pulled a bunch of bobtails out of the driveway next door because my neighbor doesent know how to build a driveway. all i use is 3/8'' chain or a 3/4'' cable. i dont take chances. and when things get bad we have a 4-1 block and tackle if there is a big enough tree around. i always say "you hook it up and i'll pull out whatever you have it hooked to"

Broke me cheesy $20 strap last weekend(the guy i was pullin left it in park) One of my buddies is a crane operator he said he will hook me up with 2 25' straps that he uses on a 90 ton crane so those should hold!

I don't claim to know everything but a lot of what I'm reading on this thread scares me. I work in an industry where I do a lot of hoisting and rigging. That could potentially affect the general public on a daily basis. And we use metal cables, chain, and synthetics. All of which have their intended purposses (sp). Chain should never be used for un sticking a truck especially 3/8 as some have stated. It is not made for that kind of shock load, and the chain that is, is more expensive than most people are willing to pay for. I just last week bought a length of 1/2" chain, and at that thickness only has a tagged rating of 7500lbs. Cable as well, it is stronger and more reliable than chain, but only if used properly. Once it has a kink or shape to it, it's rating is reduced drastically. For the purpose of un sticking a truck my money and safety is on the proper strap. Everything that you are stuck in has a certain stiction. mud is like x4 i think. Meaning that if your truck weighs 6800lbs for example then if your stuck bad in mud you are pulling 27200lbs to unstick it. If your just pulling a truck a tow strap is fine but to un stick something you need a snatch strap. And rant off.
That is some really good advice

damm good advise--
a 3/4t stuck in mud to the rockers for two days will not come out with a D8 on a gravel road with a straight pull (with 1"grousers),,, bury the D8 and use winch(be careful what you attach it to though),,, beendaredundat
