SUMMARY: Includes diesel-powered vehicles manufactured after the 1997 model-year and diesel-powered vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 8,501 pounds into the biennial smog check program, starting January 1, 2010

this would be for the pickup and cars in ca,federal is pushing so everyone will adopt some sort if havent already. big rigs have their own rules and regulations that the arb doesnt even know what their doing yet, but its passed and things will change, im not to sure about the motor swap i guess depends on how much the reff knows, but its ganne be smog equipment visual and particulate tests. count on it changing bc theyve already had about 5 diff laws and just decided on one to please the feds and hippies..what a joke such a small percentage of the "pollution" are diesel vehicles

I just typed in "gross vehicle weight for 2001 dodge diesel" and there is a site with a chart listing that my truck weights 8800. I'm asuming the same for other years, but anyways lc pti check for your PSD that way too. You might be OK.

That is not your actual weight. That is your gross weight rating. Either way you are ok due the the new laws weight requirement. The other side of the coin is you would still have to retrofit the smog crap on the PSD motor if it was under that weight rating. And you can do that with a 12 valve too. So I don't think it would matter either way. just my .02cents though!

I think the law states gross weight and not actual weight

Call CHP or a state ref. One of these two places should be able to help you out, from the info that I have found its illegal to put an older motor in a newer vehicle, from what I understand this goes for both gas and diesel vehicles. I havent seen a law stating it but....well we live in cali. They will find a way to screw us.

Thats what I was getting at. On the scales I'm at 8000 #'s so I guess my cummins needs to gain some weight.

Yup, got all my stock stuff except the down pipe. Easy fix though. Since I bought my truck in nevada, its not 50 state legal no smog stuff Hopefully its like my old 72 Chevelle where they just ran the VIN to see that it was from out of state, no EGR on my chevelle as CA cars of the same year did. Can anyone tell me what the 01's cam with in CA regarding smop equipment??
