Diesel Derby Car

Anyone ever seen this done? I'm playing with the idea just to do something different because I've never seen done before. I realize it would have to be an n/a motor with no turbo, possibly a 6.2? Anybody have any input on what they think of this?

I've already realized the hardest part is going to be actually finding the engine to go in it

The only problem I see is the competitors complaining about it being diesel and possibly having an advantage to move out faster than others. Other than that I say go for it.

I see them old 6.2 at the junk yard all the time same with the n/a 6.9 and 7.3 internationals. Some of the 6.5 wre n/a in the Hummers I believe.

Diesel definantly would make it cooler, but probably not better. I would think the extra heat a diesel creates could be a problem if you loose coolant. Possibly coming to a grinding stop sooner than a gasser. Waiting for a N/A diesel to wind up would suck and cost you some speed. I'm down with most diesels- even the guy down the streets diesel S-10, but not in a derby car. Stick with a big block.

I think its a cool idea but Im not sure it would do what you want, of course im no derby expert or anything like that but I would assume that you would want a car that gets up and boogies quick. I think a N/A diesel would take to long to get up and moving; hence inflicting less damage on the competitor and making yourself a slow moving target.

I don't know if it would really be so bad because most of the guys around here don't run anything usually bigger than 305's or 350's and quite a few of them even run 6 cylinders. Last night I was talking with some friends about doing it and this guy who thinks his 94 IDI f-250 is god's greatest creation tries to tell me it won't last because it will overheat. I told him no $*@^ its going to overheat it's a derby car! And even if I didn't make it very far I would still be pretty cool just to say I did it.

Most production companies that put on demolition derbys have it right in the rules that no diesel engines are allowed. At least that's how it is out here in PA.
