Tach

Ok, this is my first venture into the world of diesels. I purchased a 93 ram with a 12v that I pulled out and installing in a 96 chevy 2500. Anyways, I want to run all autometer gauges. The 93 did not have a tach so I am wondering what I need to get to hook up a tach to the engine. I saw one gauge made by autometer that has a pulse sensor that mounts on the alternator. Only problem is I want all the gauges in the dash and all of them to match so I don't want an odd ball pedestal mount gauge. Is there a kit out there that will let me run a regular tach?

The 93 did have provisions for a tach from the factory. You didn't say if you reused the Dodge harness or the chevy. But it doesn't matter.

Most aftermarket tachs are looking for a 9 to 12 volts square wave signal. Square wave means on and off. There are a couple of ways you can do it. The alt pickup is one. You know about the AutoMeter 288 tach. Many 1st gen drivers use it.

The next way would be to glue a couple of magnets to the balencer and use a magnetic pickup. Any good electrical supply house can get you one. MFG a bracket to mount it to the engine. The 93 crank sensor is mounted at the 11:00 position on the engine. There are two standoff type studs there for that reason.

If you reused the Dodge harness in the chevy. The tach harness is located by the steering column on the left side. It is a small flat black 4 wire plug.

Actually, you don't have to use magnets on the harmonic ballancer, the notch in there is sufficient to break the magnetic field, also I would forget about the alternator mount. I know what you want to do, :thumbsup same thing I did, check out pictures of my truck on my truck profile, I have a couple of my gauge setup, I am sure you will have questions, ask away!!:thumbsup

sorry it took so long to get back. We moved our shop so the truck got put on hold for a while. Now I'm back to it and it should be done in about a week or two. Only a few minor things left. Everything is in now. That is exactly what I was talking about. I've got phantom gauges I put in it this past week and all are wired except the tach. I found the crank sensor wire on the engine. Can that be directly connected to the input wire on the tach?
