1979 F250 12V prerunner build

I have been working on this project for a few months now. Finally got some time to upload a thread here to help any that might want to do a similar conversion and get some tips/feedback from any of you who have been down this road already. Here's the starting point: rescued a 1979 F250 crew cab that had been abandoned. It's the prettiest truck I had ever seen, picked it up for $800. The box is trashed but the cab and chassis were in mint condition.

First step on this project was to get it through the safety inspection and give it a clear vin..... might not exactly be street legal when I'm done if you know what I'm saying? Let's keep that on the DL though! Had to do the basics... brakes, carb, replaced a synchro in the tranny and sealed everything up. Cost a few unnecessary dollars but got me through safety and gave me a truck to drive while I look for a donor truck.

2 months later I found this beauty for $2000. 97 with the 215 hp p pump and manual transmission. Its a 4 wheel drive but the front axle was exploded. I can still use the transfer case, rad, intercooler, tranny and whatever else I can peel off it. Also.... the flat deck is perfect to haul around the snowmobiles for a season while I build up the Ford!

Once I had the donor truck on the road, it was time to tear into the '79. My favourite part, time to rip and tear!!

Got a little carried away and forgot to take pics until I already had the box and front clip off

Cab Off

This thing is in great shape!

Only took a day to tear this thing down, so nice working on old trucks. This is the main reason for this conversion, I want to put my money into something simple. reliable and fuel efficient..... Also I want to hammer back roads at high rates of speed.

Came with an I6 300.... way too underpowered and I was lucky to get 9mpg out of it with the 4 speed.

I pushed the chassis outside, built a dolly for the cab and started stripping it down.

Trailered the frame out to get sandblasted. This will probably be the only thing on the truck that I hire out, worth every penny though.....

And once I got it back to the shop, immediately finished stripping the axles and unnecessary brackets and mounts.

Here it is all cleaned up and ready to start the fab work required for the linked suspensions

Got the cab fully stripped before I move onto the fabricating...

Exposed the only real flaw on this cab, right rear corner was completely rusted out and unattached

Decided that rather than patching it all together, decided to cut it out and start from square one

Fit a piece of 4x4x1/4 into place, this will be much stronger and give the frame some extra stiffness for the suspension mounts

Painted the inner frame and ran the wiring/plumbing before I started on frame re enforcements and suspension mounts

And then back to the cab... got the rear support welded in...

Starting on the first re enforcement plates.....

Tacked the rear axle in place to reference all the measurements for the dual tri-angulated four link
