A friend of mine has an 07 Colorado with 340,000 miles on it and he really wants to put a 4cyl diesel in it, cummins has the new ISF 3.8 that is used in a bunch of vehicles in Europe and other places overseas, we live in Cali and he wants to know how involved the conversion will be, he is obviously gonna need a beefier tranny and driveline, axles etc, but what other problems will be run into? Is the Euro 4 requirements equal to the tier 3 or tier 4 we have here in the states?
I imagine your going to run into more problems getting the thing to pass all the EPA laws and inspection laws in Cali more than anywhere else in the US.

Yeah unfortunately that's all to real and I could only imagine the headaches it's gonna create, but do you think it's doable? I told him just go buy a brand new truck or search craigslist for a good deal on a 2nd or 3rd gen
I really have no idea I know California is strict on so many things but i dont live there i dont know any of the rules that apply there.

Haha we don't even really know what the laws are, I've heard some stories that a few local shops won't pass the truck cause he "modified the exhaust" with a pyrometer..... Oh well it's his money, I'm guessing a 8k conversion cost... He could find a good truck for that
OK, that's a euro engine. And getting one over here or one that is already here and paying for it would probably get pretty exspensive real quick. And of course like it's already been mentioned, your in Cali and the regulations over there are..... OMG!!!. We dont deal with NOTHING like that over here in Southwest Texas. 4bt running straight exahust... ROLLING COAL BUDDY!!! And it's still passing inspection.
But I would recomened looking at the ISB 3.9 It's a newer cummins engine and it's running in modern stock vans and some bread trucks. All your EPA "Enviromental Painintha A$$" stuff is all there. Youd have to make a few modifications like a muffler and stuff. But your more likely to pass your inspection and get that truck certified, plus the ISB produces more tourque and HP.
I have personally seen a dragger out of Odessa/Midland Texas. Old ford 63 or 68. 4 cylinder ISB 3.9L Cummins, at 6,000 RPM producing 1,200+ lb pounds.. IT WAS SICK
I'd look into the ISB 3.9 or the 4bt 3.9 but hay its just my 2 cents!
